It Happened: Buck Fifty Gas

By: Mr. Wilson on December 9, 2008
Lincoln has crossed the line to buck fifty gas. The current lowest listed price is $1.47 for midgrade at Sam's on North 27th. The lowest price for regular -- my fuel of choice -- is $1.51 at the same location. Who knows, we may soon be able to drive like it's 1999.

That is still double the cheapest (non-promotional) price I’ve ever filled up at: 77.9

When I was in high school I would work the counter at our small town gas station on summer evenings as a 2nd or 3rd job. I’ll never forget the night I was working the 6-10pm shift selling $.91 gas and when the owner left for the night he stopped and said “After you close down tonight, but before you leave, I want you to change the marquee to read $1.03 Regular.” I nearly crapped myself! Gas at more than a dollar!?

I called all of my relatives and had them come fill up their vehicles before I closed that night. We just KNEW that it couldn’t stay that high for very long.

I thought about that a lot when it was near $4 this past spring…

If I’m going to drive like it’s 1999, I need to find a blue 1990 Honda Civic hatchback.  I loved that car.

Don’t get too used to it folks ... a lot of gas’s falling price follows b/c of the market drop ... people are bailing on oil futures as well, so price has dropped.  Sad thing is we’ll be fighting rising gas prices as the market recovers as well.  Of course all of this is opinion.

Let’s enjoy it while it lasts!
