Have You Lost One You Loved?

By: Mr. Wilson on October 23, 2009
Matt Olberding points out that several restaurants have closed recently in Lincoln. They include: Billy Brown's; Bennigan's; Cici's; Lina's west location; and Popeye's by Southwest High School. I have already blathered on about how much I'll miss Lina's so I won't rehash that. I never made it to Bennigan's so I won't miss that one. I had never been to Cici's either, though I did have their pizza once at an event. Won't miss it. Popeye's? The one on South 70th Street is closer to my house, so if I ever get a craving I'll go over there. That leaves Billy Brown's. Frankly I'm surprised Billy Brown's lasted this long. Theirs was such a small space. I didn't see how they could serve enough food to pay the bills. I enjoyed what I had the times I went there, although service was downright terrible on our first visit. I'm bummed not so much because of the loss of that specific restaurant as because it was a relatively unique local restaurant. Have any other restaurants closed recently?

Clearly, none of them were loved much, or they’d still be in business. I will miss Bennigan’s only slightly, as it was the closest to my place and it was not bad for doing a quick carry-out order. I only dined in twice, and did not walk away impressed either time.

Sometimes, we get hungry for “bar food” like big burgers and whatnot, but theirs usually would disappoint. I didn’t much care for the Irish flair put on anything for whatever reason. If it were a Ruby Tuesday or TGIFriday, it would have gotten a lot more business from us.

It was fairly busy - I think the failure of the parent company probably exerted more pressure there than the lack of local business, but that was probably a factor as well.

I HATED Cici’s. Good riddance.

Mi Guadalahara closed (16th and Old Cheney), but Antonio said he hopes to open in a larger, “non-gas station” location next year, possibly.

Super guy, great food.

Aw damn. Honestly I had planned to see if my father wanted to go grab lunch there today. So much for that idea.
