Five Guys And Some Beef

By: Mr. Wilson on August 6, 2009
So apparently Five Guys is (are?) coming to Lincoln. #LNK twitterers are all ... umm ... twitterpated over the news. I have just one question: What the heck is Five Guys? I'm fairly certain I've never heard of it. Am I the only clueless one?

Wow, that is awesome if it is true. They are a mid-Atlantic/DC-area chain known for burgers and freshly made fries. A little surprising that they are expanding out here.

I took a photo of the fries a while ago on a DC trip. They are very good.

There’s several locations here in Kansas City. All orders are put into to-go bags, the fries are thrown on top, and pallets of open peanut bags are scattered around the restaurant. (Like Whiskey Creek, you throw them on the floor.)

The food is very tasty, albeit a bit pricey (a burger + fries + drink is in the $8 range).

I’ve only heard of it because Michelle Obama got a lot of press for saying she & the staff went there for lunch.

I ate there in D.C. recently also. I enjoyed the simplicity of the place. They seem to go out of their way to be generic. Plain paper sacks, white menus with black letters, only 5 menu items (cheeseburger, small cheeseburger, fries, small fries, drink), etc.

My wife and I were talking about their prices as well. We were hoping the $8-$10 for a burger & fries were D.C. area prices and they might drop a bit for Lincoln. or not.

The burgers were good in that raw hamburger+salt/pepper+heat kind off way.

Anyone have an idea where they might set up shop? I’d love it if the old Hy-Vee at 70th/O would turn into a high-end fast food court.

- 5 Guys
- Tokyo Joes
- Chipotle
- Noodles & Co.
-all under one roof. Great parking an O street access, surrounded by neighborhoods and hospitals in an area with lame fast food access.

A guy can dream - right?

Regarding the high price…keep in mind that a regular burger at five guys is actually a double burger, and the patties are freshly made too. Likewise, the fries are freshly made from whole potatoes and not the frozen/flash-fried type that predominate at most fast food places, and in addition to the cup of fries you get they usually dump more of them in your bag too.

In short, its a significantly higher quality burger and fries than what one might normally get, and a lot of food to boot. Its a total health nightmare, but that’s not the point. The point is that its a lot of food and very tasty for the price. I would pay $8 for that.
