Wasabi Robbie Speaks

By: Mr. Wilson on May 6, 2008
Rob "Wasabi Robbie" Burns dropped by to leave a few comments on a post from April to give us some updates about happenings at his restaurant. I will repost one of his comments here:
We are now open 7 nights a week. Evenings are more dependable for business. I work everyday of the week. EVERYDAY. Anyone else really do that? I need the less busy daytimes on MTW to do paperwork, respond to gossip, and continue upgrades, etc. We will be opening for six lunches (M-S) when I can get dependable daytime help (i.e. my teenage girls to work the front end.) Anyone have experience employing young people or “downtowners” these days. Ask any downtown restaurant operator… Regarding fresh fish, food quality, etc.: We are the only Japanese restaurant in town that JAPANESE people will eat. Ask any of them. ANY. Weather it is Kawasaki personnel or students, or other people. REAL Japanese food is not fancy. Fresh Fish is a matter of management. This is much more difficult than producing sushi. Teaching new personnel who have never been to Japan about the taste, presentation, simple aesthetics is hard. It is more than sandwiches and hamburgers.... Thanks for your interest and concern. We are still alive, and actually doing better a few months ago. The simple move of a few blocks cost us about 35% of our business. People don’t know where we are, and the university staff, faculty haven’t been able to make it the extra blocks during the past cold winter. Hopefully that will change. Thanks again.
There you have it. Wasabi is still open and chugging along.

I’m thrilled to hear Wasabi is on stable ground. We’re planning another sushi outing for one of the days it’s open for lunch.

Sorry to hear that the Burrito Shack closed one of its locations. The food is very good, it’s worth venturing into the skywalk to give it a try.

Speaking of the old torn down downtown block I noticed that Taste of China has a building permit for 16th and Old Cheney.  I believe it’s to the west of Culvers in a new strip building.  I never ate at the one downtown (that I can remember) so my question is…how’s the food?

Im SO glad to hear this. I spent some time in Ozu when I was in college and fell in love with the people and the food. I definitely will have to make a trip downtown soon.

i really like Wasabi, because it’s sushi is the best in Lincoln (now that Cafe de Mai is gone ... sadness!).

however, i have one small complaint. the service is lacking. it took nearly an hour and 15 mins to get two rolls and two pieces of nigiri. that’s why the drive to omaha for Sushi-Japan is worth it.

i visited Sushi-Japan for the first time a couple weeks ago and had a party of 7. we ended up ordering 88 piece of sushi-maki (11 rolls), 4 temaki (hand-rolls), and about 12 pc. of nigiri, along with miso, salad, and two other entrees… it only took about 30-45 mins for full service. plus, the staff are all Japanese with the exception of one server, and everyone speaks Japanese which is great for me, as I do also.

But… If I’m going to stay local and have sushi the way it is meant to be served, Wasabi is still my #1 choice IN LINCOLN.
