So Long, Wasabi Robbie?

By: Mr. Wilson on April 10, 2008
Long-time Lincolnite regular Foxspit contributed the following piece: A much-anticipated lunch outing to Wasabi with my co-workers was stopped dead in its tracks today when we discovered that the restaurant is only open for lunch on Thursdays and Fridays. It's still open in the evenings. I noticed that they were loading out a big screen TV and some other things, so I'm led to believe this may be the beginning of the end for Wasabi. I hate to see any local business suffer and I can't help but think that Wasabi has never fully recovered from the move foisted upon it by the City's impatience to replace the restaurant with a parking lot. I can see why they were in such a hurry, it is a pretty sweet parking lot. Thank goodness we aren't bothered by those pesky, taxpaying local businesses anymore. Speaking of which, did China Inn (is that what it was called) ever relocate anywhere? Anyway, a co-worker made a pretty astute observation. If a sushi restaurant is struggling, he doesn't want to eat there. It's never good to cut corners with raw fish.

China Inn is on 27th & Cornhusker, just north of Super Saver.

Taste of China is the former downtown restaurant.

I just stumbled across this post on the Journal Star. I guess there was an auction of equipment recently.

Oh duh, I even read that post shortly after Matt put it up. It completely slipped my mind.

Anyone know did Burrito Shack close its doors too? I drove by there last night around 6pm and it looked dark and empty to me. I hope that is not the case.

I drove by yesterday afternoon and it was open for lunch. Based on my visits there, I’m guessing time is running out. Great food but not much business.

This just in ... Erbert and Gerbert’s is closed.

The main reason they closed is the quality of their food. Some of the worst Japanese food I’ve ever had. Period.

Thanks for the interest and comments.
Here are the facts:

We are now open 7 nights a week. Evenings are more dependable for business. I work everyday of the week. EVERYDAY. Anyone else really do that? I need the less busy daytimes on MTW to do paperwork, respond to gossip, and continue upgrades, etc.
We will be opening for six lunches (M-S) when I can get dependable daytime help (i.e. my teenage girls to work the front end.) Anyone have experience employing young people or “downtowners” these days. Ask any downtown restaurant operator…

Regarding fresh fish, food quality, etc.
We are the only Japanese restaurant in town that JAPANESE people will eat. Ask any of them. ANY. Weather it is Kawasaki personnel or students, or other people. REAL Japanese food is not fancy.
Fresh Fish is a matter of management. This is much more difficult than producing sushi.
Teaching new personnel who have never been to Japan about the taste, presentation, simple esthetics is hard. It is more than sandwiches and hamburgers….

Thanks for your interest and concern. We are still alive, and actually doing better a few months ago. The simple move of a few blocks cost us about 35% of our business. People don’t know where we are, and the university staff, faculty haven’t been able to make it the extra blocks during the past cold winter. Hopefully that will change.

Thanks again.

By the way, Taste of China is planning to go to 14th & Old Cheney. China Inn is different and located at 27th & Cornhusker as noted.

I helped May Lo Eden of Manila Bay to move her stuff, store, it, and organize it for the sale. I sold a few extra pieces that I had for Papa John’s Greek Restaurant (that I bought two years ago), but still have all of the pieces for the next Wasabi.

The spaceI have a 10th and N is leased, highly visible, and good for sales. Please let people know that we are still is business in Downtown.

Burrito Shack is closing the 9th st. location, but has set up in the skywalk in downtown. Their business is much better there.

Jeff,

Sorry you had a bad experience. I am not always able to inspect or produce every dish, but I try to. Our staff now is more stable, and I believe our consistency has improved.

As I mentioned above, our food is authentic Japanese, not necessarily some fusion, dressed-up item….We still mess up sometimes, but I believe that we are, on the whole, better than most. Please try us again, and let me know. I will be happy to cover you if your experience isn’t dramatically different.

Thanks for the feedback. We need it.
