Downtown is No Home for Homer’s

By: Mr. Wilson on May 15, 2007
Homer's, long a staple of Downtown retail, is closing its Downtown location. It's not a huge blow for Downtown, but it certainly doesn't help the city's efforts to draw more retail to the area. In place of Homer's Lincoln will get a new sandwich shop, Erbert & Gerbert's, a sandwich chain with stores in the north-central U.S. I hope I don't sound ungrateful when I say "Woo, another sandwich shop!". They wouldn't open up shop if they didn't see an opening in the market. Here's hoping I have a new regular spot to eat, but I'm a little concerned: E&G's uses Jif instead of the far-superior Skippy. I'll try not to hold that against them.

bummer about homers.  It was the only place I would physically go to to get a CD, which was very rarely.  Amazon or direct from the artist was my usual raout.

As for the sammy chain.  It looks pretty much meh…  JJ is great cuz you can get a slim and chips for a few bucks.  I have never wanted a cold cut sammy so bad that I would go get one.  Just when I happen to be drunk downtown.  Quizno’s is a different story, that stuff is good.  I hate to be a negative Nancy, but nothing about E&G makes me want to try them.

Another sub sandwich shop.  *Yawn*

Downtown retail has taken a kick in the shorts lately with two of my favorite stores going out of business (Avant Card and Homer’s).

I am a dyed-in-the-wool Jif fan myself, but I still can’t get excited about another sandwich shop.

Sandwich shop item unrelated to above…
Have you seen that the parking lot on NW corner of 27th and Randolph is closed until July 1st.  M & N already difficult to access is now marooned.  Norm must be spitting nails.

If Norm hadn’t b-slapped me for forgetting that he doesn’t take debit cards I would throw him some business.  But he proceeded to yell at his only customers, which leads me to believe that he remains in business in spite of himself.

I used to get a kick out of his sandwich Nazi ways but last time he seethed a little too much for me.  I haven’t been back.

If I’m in a forgiving mood I’ll go visit him in the next month.

so this has been gnawing on me for a while and now that a business is closing downtown I thought I might bring this up: why not hooters?

I know I know, hooters isn’t exactly the finest in dining and it serves to one crowd and one crowd only but…to be a college town and not have one…seems kinda strange to me.

Now the one on 70th and O was a miserable failure only because it was in a horrible location.  But a downtown/haymarket location would be perfect.  Its more of an O St. type than a Haymarket but their business would boom on CFB saturdays.

so?

It doesn’t seem strange to me to not have a Hooters .... it’s refreshing.

Good question, D.M.B. Kind of a weird question, but still a good one. Obviously “because their food sucks” isn’t a sufficient answer or they wouldn’t have so many locations. And besides, it’s not like Lincolnites have picky tastebuds.

exactly Mr. Wilson.

and how is it refreshing Diane?

Hooters has always been associated with a party atmosphere and a good time.  What better place than downtown?

Agree with the Hooters downtown. It’s a natural for the after-5 workers and the college kids being right there. It was way out of the way on East O.

Thank God for another sandwich shop in the Homer’s locale! It’s just so far to get to Doozy’s, Subway, Jimmy Johns, and Planet Sub all within a block from there.

For all (but one) intents and purposes, there’s been a Hooters downtown for years; it’s called BW-3.  😉

I agree Swid.  And besides the scenery, BW3’s wins hands down.  It just kinda seems like a natural fit.

It just makes me wish that I had enough money to buy a franchise because I think it would be a money maker.

according to a peep over at SCS there is yet another sammy shop opening up between OSO and Yai Yai’s that is very close to JJ’s.

You know we could use a coffee place downtown 😉

B or K - maybe a good place for a coffee place would be at 8th and P. I think there are only 3 at the corner now.

The corners of 8th & P and 14 & P should set up an exchange program.  😛
