But What About the Jingle?

By: Mr. Wilson on June 12, 2009
A few weeks ago, Jack and John brought up the topic of (in)famous local jingles you just can't get out of your head. One that I remember is "Russwood Chrysler Plymouth / You're number one in all we do!". Except the jingle doesn't work so well for a dealership that no longer sells Chryslers. One of these days, remembering that jingle is going to be a sign that I'm an old timer, isn't it?

“Count on EMC!” Love that one that they play twenty times after every Husker basketball games. Or how about “N St. Drive In, We supply the…Fun!”

I grew up in california, so I remember:

“If you want a car or truck, go see cal!”

The song that accompanies the “Best in Class” montages is the same one that has been playing since I was a kid. I grew up in northwest Iowa and all of the stations in that area used the same song as well.

Also, the 10/11 “Hello, Lincoln” promos uses the same song that one of the Sioux City or Sioux Falls stations used when I was a kid. The lyrics to that version were “Hello Siouxland”

“Save big money @ Menards” and the Schaefer’s “Christmas in July” song…which we should start hearing again soon.

Schaefers also used “the only thing better than our prices is our service, Schaafers TV and Appliance Cen-TER!” which they have slightly altered and begun using over the last year again.

I’m glad the jingles for the “Liiincoln Eye and Laser Ins-ti-tute!” have finally died down.  That one always bothered me.

There have been some lousy local jingles, to be sure.

Not that it is a bad one, but I am somewhat astounded that U-Stop still uses (to the best of my knowledge at least), “there’s only one thing to do - you stop at U-Stop.” I know the guys that sang that jingle, and it had to have been recorded at the end of the 1980’s.

A couple Caribbean-style jingles come to mind:

The “Lemon Days at Gateway Center” one, and

“No-body comes close to Cus-tom ...  Cus-tom Elec-tronics!”

I think it’s “Ed”, the U-Stop handyman.

I heard the Walker Tire jingle this morning on the radio - that one has to be a 7 or 8 on the annoying scale.

I’ve heard it a bunch, too, and it made me think of this thread. Too funny.
