Broadcast Indecency

Lincoln's Own KLKN is off the air for local Time Warner Cable subscribers thanks to a dispute over retransmission fees. The fight is pretty simple to summarize: KLKN wants more cash, TWC wants to pay less; KLKN wants you to believe TWC is a bully, TWC wants you to believe KLKN is unreasonable. It's all standard stuff. Of course none of us can really say who is right. We don't know the specifics of what they're fighting over. Perhaps KLKN is being unreasonable. Perhaps TWC is abusing its position to bully the little guy. I can say that KLKN implying it belongs in the same group as ESPN is pretty silly. After all, KLKN's primary added value over other ABC options available on TWC comes from its local content, and -- no offense KLKN -- it's not the strongest local content out there. All of this does have me wondering how much TWC customers pay for KLKN, KOLN, and other major network affiliates. I assume we'll find out soon enough how much KLKN is worth to TWC since our cable bills will be lowered accordingly since we aren't receiving KLKN right now. You wouldn't charge us for services not provided, would you Time Warner Cable?

Unfortunately for KLKN, we have another ABC option which really puts a hamper on their negotiating position.

Not only do we have another ABC option, but they actually present their news in widescreen HD, with crisp sound.

KLKN is run about the same as if you had ancient equipment to run a High School TV station. They clearly don’t bother to hire a sound engineer of any kind, or if they have one, he or she must be deaf.

As the crow flies, KLKN is located quite close to TWC. The KLKN tranmission of picture and sound is of such bad quality, that TWC has offered their own technicians to come over and work on it to clean it up, just so it comes off better on cable. KLKN refused.

I don’t like the on-air product from KOLN, but once they switched to widescreen HD, I cannot watch the Channel 8 news.

Faithful readers know that I have no love for TWC. I happily cut the cord this summer and went to DirecTV. If you’d like to follow me there (where I still get Channel 8, plus the Big Ten Network and the NFL Network), let me know - I can hook you up with $100 savings. 😊

So, are the TWC ads accurate in implying that bad weather leads to loss of satellite signal?

I always thought it ironic when they said that, since the cable companies get their signal via satellite, but then maybe those big dishes work better and differently than the mini-dishes.

It is accurate that it can go out in the rain. However, the total time mine has been out, even with all the storms since July 1, is less time than TWC was out due to the power outage a couple of weeks ago.

With my HD antenna, I can still get the over the air signals even if the satellite won’t pick them up.

It has always annoyed me that the picture on KLKN news looks like I am viewing it through a dirty, smudged window.
