Another Tradition Snuffed

By: Mr. Wilson on August 9, 2006
Say goodbye to another Lincoln tradition: the Haymarket Farmers Market has banned pets as of September. Taking pets to the Farmers Market has been a tradition since the Market's opening. Complaining about them has been a tradition nearly as long.

Smoking was also a ‘tradition’ in Lincoln bars and restaurants for years, but people were more than happy when that tradition was snuffed.

I see the picture on the Journal Star site of the dog hovering around food which humans will at some point be eating, and I can’t help but think what a great idea it is to ban animals from the Farmer’s Market.

So wash your food. I sometimes think people have this quaint idea of a farmers market; that the food is ‘natural’ so how could it be bad? Come on….If they would extend the area, if necessary, the space issues would take care of themselves. I have had more trouble with people then I have ever had with dogs in the FM.

I am more afraid of the children there actually.
If you smell like sour milk, you should not be near food.

but, yeah keep the dogs out of the severely crowded market.

I have a dog and I have kids.  I don’t take the dog to the market and the kids have to walk - no sport utility strollers here.

It’s not that hard to figure out: High traffic in a small area, there’s no room for dogs or strollers.

I am astounded by the ammount of comments on the LJS site.
I am sure we are going to see a bunch of letters to the editor on this issue.

My fav was one asking why people do not take their dogs to husker games, the mall, or crocery shopping.  How true.

I have a few solutions.
1. I get a flatbed truck and fill it with dog kennels.  you pay me $5 and I will store your pet while you buy your stuffis.  Heck I will even give your pooch a treat and seranade them with ROE speedwagon songs.

2. We set up a puppy parade on a street adjacent to the FM.  You can dress your dog up in funny costumes, and strut your pampered pooch for all to see.  Cuz you know it is pretty much people wanting to show off their pets in the first place.

Seeing the complaints about the strollers is a hoot.
