Adios, Lina’s

By: Mr. Wilson on October 9, 2009
It appears that Lina's on 10th Street has already closed, not long after an ad for the property appeared on Craigslist. The Missus and I tried to eat there last night, but we were too late. Although that's pretty terrible news, it sounds like the 70th and O location is still around. I can still get my favorite taco in town (pollo asado), I'll just have to drive farther out of my way to do it. Drat.

I guess this just does not shock me at all, for a number of reasons. I think the food was okay, but just okay. You’ll all shoot me for saying so, but all in all, I’d still rather eat at Chipotle.

The few times when we were there were always on Saturday nights, and always at the peak of the dinner hour. There were never more than 3 tables, at the most, in use. Drvie-through traffic was sporadic.

When you are in a stand-alone location, someone still has to be paying a mortgage on that building. Rent has to be fairly pricey, not to mention the cost of food, cost for employees, etc. I would walk away every time not understanding how they could make it.

Then, they opened another location in no time. That just doesn’t make good business sense to me. I’ve never been to the O Street locale, but empty restaurants in general just can’t stay open forever, unless they are a front for some other activity, or a planned business loss to make up for huge business profits in another business. Even if the last case was plausible, you eventually have to show some efforts to make a profit or the IRS will nail you.

Perhaps it’s due to the nature of my business, but this stuff just puzzles me. Someone will take a big financial hit here.

I obviously can’t speak to their business flow overall, but I saw peak times and dry times both. Traffic had certainly slowed over the past couple months. They seemed to have a decent lunch crowd, but dinner was definitely down.

As for preferring Chipotle, HOW DARE YOU, YOU CORPORATIST BASTARD! [Pause for shock value.] I kid, I kid. People like what they like. Just because something is “more authentic” doesn’t mean it’s good.

I just may like my Mexican food more Americanized. I am sure I like my Chinese food more Americanized.

The thing that brings me back to Chipotle is that the whole family (even the kids) enjoys it, the prices are fair, and they use solid ingredients to make something taste great.

I’ve been to Oso a handful of times, and I don’t dislike it at all. And I go to Qdoba once in a great while, which is corporate, but Chipotle stands above them.

I, too, prefer my Mexican and Chinese food Americanized. Hence my love of Chipotle, Oso, and Panda Express (I know, shoot me.)

Anyway, I did hear a Lina’s opened in Omaha. Not sure where, but it’s Mexican, so I wonder if it’s the same place?

While I love Chipotle…Lina’s was my favorite restaurant in town…I think it was quite a bit more than just okay…and much better than D’Leon’s…

This makes me sad…very very sad

I refuse to eat Chipotle. Their politics are an insult to the American Farmer. I’ll take Qdoba any day. Now, if they would only open on the south side of town ...
