2020 Headline: Lincoln’s Newest Dealerships Open in Hickman and Ceresco

By: Mr. Wilson on October 22, 2009
Another day, another car dealership moves to Lincoln's edge. This time Meginnis Ford is moving from its home at 66th and Q to 33rd and Yankee Hill. That places nearly all of Lincoln's new car buying options near one end or the other of 27th Street. I suppose that's a good thing from a shopper's perspective. But from a neighborhood beauty perspective ... yuck. Car dealerships have always seemed unsightly to me. They can be a real turnoff to my perception of an area. Maybe it's just me. Let's say Meginnis's current location will be up for grabs for absolutely anything once the dealership moves. What should happen with that space?

What should happen with that space?

It should lie fallow for several years, being an eyesore of an empty lot as mall culture continues to slowly bleed out, gasping for life, until a decade later when it’s bulldozed over and a Hy-Vee moves in.

Oh wait, that’s what it will do, not what it should do.

You totally forgot the neighborhood and media outrage when the old Hy Vee is uprooted and moved in here.

Maybe Colleen Seng could get some of her old pals together, and they could use taxpayer money and buy that land for, like $5 million, then sit on it for a handful of years, then sell it for, like $2 million.

We could use a 3rd mongolian grill style eatery in a 100 yard radius. That would be awesome.

Seriously though - that’s just about my back yard we’re talking about, so I’d love to see a food place or two in there. Chipotle? Noodles? Chili’s? Red Robin?

Maybe the folks who run 9 South Chargrille could open a “Chargrille 66th”?

I’m not holding my breath on rapid redevelopment. Seems I recall that the whole opened at 70th & O when Hy-Vee moved was supposed to be filled right away. Hasn’t happened yet.

I know the first Mongolian grill-style eatery you refer to (Hu-Hot). What’s the second?

A new place just opened on the east side of 66th - literally across the street from Hu-Hot. I forget the name, but it says “Mongolian Grille” in neon on the side of the building. (Yes, Grille, with an e.) When I drove by at 1pm today there was not a parking spot to be had.

I don’t understand.

Is that in the former daVinci’s location?

And seriously, “Grille” on a Mongolian restaurant? That’s just weird.

Yes - former daVinci’s. In fact, daVinci’s closed and the temoprary sign saying “mongolian grille coming soon” went up within hours. It appears from the exteriour that they gutted the place and started fresh. I can’t imagine the amount of $$$ that went into this, especially considering there is a place with the exact same food & theme across the street.

I’ll hold off on judgment until I’ve been in, but on the face of it, it’s hard to understand the logic.

Wacky. I wonder if it’s a Knudsen restaurant? Perhaps, along with Greenfield’s, they’re branching out from their “Italian Sidewalk Cafe” roots.
