The Oven is Adding a New Location

By: Mr. Wilson on December 24, 2006
Fresh from the rumor mill, I heard today that The Oven, one of Lincoln's best restaurants, is expanding to a second location. The new location will be in the 70th and Pioneers area, near Venue. Let me emphasize that this is just a rumor at this point, but it seems to be a fairly reliable one. If true, chalk up another victory for locally-owned restaurants.

I’m totally risking my cred here, but I want to go out on a limb to see if anyone else is with me.

Anybody think the Oven is way overrated? I would rather go to Shar-e-punjab or Taj Mahal over the Oven any day. Plenty of Oven apologists have provided me with hours of “You just don’t understand Indian food” and “The Oven’s food is so much more authentic” and whatnot, but when it comes down to it, I think the other restaurants taste better, the food is of higher quality, the meat isn’t over-cooked, the portions are bigger, and the prices are lower.

I know it’s an over-generalization, and I do not take away anyone’s right to enjoy the Oven, but every experience at both the Lincoln and Omaha locations have left me with the impression “If I pay more for it and it’s in the Old/Haymarket, it must be better!”

There. I said it. Can we still be friends?

Neal-

I think your cred is safe.  I too have not been overly impressed with The Oven.  My wife and I moved to Lincoln in March 2006.  We moved in from Kansas City and we like good resturants.  When we started inquiring with locals we got the usuals: Misty’s, Billy’s, The Oven, Lazlo’s, Venue, etc.

While we have been to all these resturants on multiple occasions, The Oven is my least favorite.

I hear the same thing you hear…you don’t know Indian food, it is a great atmosphere, authentic, etc.

I guess in summation the cool thing about food/resturants is that they are very subjective.  My “good” is going to be different than your “good” and so on and so on.

Nealo - The Oven is a fine restaurant. But I tend to agree that its overrated.

By the way, you should do a cartoon about the whole “snowplow-gate” hooplah. Maybe its because I’ve spent a lot of time living in much colder, more snow-prone environments than Lincoln, but the extent to which people have complained about this on the LJS comments sites amaze me. Especially since a good portion of the state is out of power. Its January people: expect some snow and ice on the roads!
