Rolling Along

By: Mr. Wilson on December 16, 2009
We were invited a party at Skate Zone (48th & Q-ish) recently, and that got me thinking about the skating rinks of Lincoln's past. Can you help me remember the skating rinks that have come and gone? Two perished relatively recently:
  • The one on West Van Dorn
  • The one in the former Hy-Vee location at 40th and Old Cheney
I remember the interior of at least one more -- they had Kangaroo -- but I can't for the life of me recall where it was located. Up around Gateway somewhere? What other skating rinks of Lincoln's past am I missing?

The one near 9th & Van Dorn was “Galaxy Skate World”.  The one at 1st & Cornhusker was called “Star” something…Star Light?  Star City?

Is it just me, or does a slice of birthday ice cream cake roll sound good about now? 😊

Oh man, I LOVED that stuff! I could also go for a round of Altered Beast.

I thought there was a skating rink at 48th and Old Cheney when the Fort moved from there to 56th, but wasn’t the Fort the original tenant at 56th?

No, the Fort took over the roller skating rink area.  I spent a lot of time there in middle school 😊  48th and Old Cheney was the Fort, it was this old wood building with railroad ties in front.

I think I do remember the rink on 56th now.  The Alamo replaced it, right, as in tore it down?

The wood building/railroad ties triggered that memory.  Geez I’m getting old.
