Open Window Policy

By: Mr. Wilson on April 25, 2007
Paul William Smith wants an open-able window policy at LPS. Apparently LPS plans to install windows that don't open in its new and remodeled schools. Smith thinks that the unlikely but nonzero chance that students may need to jump out the windows in the event of an emergency is enough reason to require windows that open. What do you think? Should LPS change course? Or do other concerns outweigh those expressed by Smith?

I suppose I can kind of see his point, but I have no knowledge of the reasonings behind the windows they are choosing. If it’s me in a classroom and the windows don’t open, a desk or chair or other projectile would be sufficient for me to “open” it myself to avoid getting shot at if such a situation arose.

I’m asking out of ignorance- What is the benefit of windows that do not open? Climate control? Allergen reduction?

My guess is a combination of cost, maintenance, climate control, and misbehavior prevention. By the latter item I mean things like preventing crap from being thrown out the window. Not that kids would ever do that sort of thing. Especially not me.
