New Food around Indian Village

By: Mr. Wilson on February 26, 2013
Zach sent along two bits of restaurant news from the Indian Village neighborhood newsletter. image First up is Bunners, a brand new restaurant going in to the former El Sitio location at 17th and Van Dorn. (El Sitio, you may recall, is now in College View at 47th and Pioneers.) The bar and grill will feature "bunners", dinner rolls stuffed with a variety of ingredients. They sound a bit Runza-ish so I'm eager to try one. Heck, maybe they'll give us the breakfast Runzas we've been asking for all these years. Bunners plans $5.00 lunch specials. That'll probably be a tough price for them to keep up for long, but if they can do it they should have no trouble getting folks in the door. They plan to be open 10:30am until midnight Monday through Thursday, and until 2:00am on Friday and Saturday. image Then there's Pepe's Bistro. Pepe's dishes up a variety of vegetarian and vegan food, and it emphasizes local ingredients as much as possible. Many of you will recognize the name because it has been a Havelock resident for a few years, but I doubt many of you have been there because of its somewhat off-the-grid location on the second floor. Pepe's has moved to Indian Village Shopping Center (3227 S. 13th Street) to improve its visibility and gain access to a nice big parking lot. Thanks, Zach, for sending along the info!

Pepe’s is off the charts good. Might be good to note that Bunner’s does not yet have their liquor license so just soft drinks for the next few weeks.

I tried Bunners on Friday night, and the Bunners have pretty good flavor. I had a Cheeseburger Bacon bunner. The owner told me that they were using purchased dough from Sysco because their mixer broke. He told me that I should try it again once they are able to use their own dough. The fries that came with it had a pretty tasty seasoning on them. They’ve done a nice job to renovate the inside of the building. They’ve got nice flat-screen TV’s in there and five Xbox consoles so that people can play video games while hanging out. It’s an interesting concept.

Sounds like something I need to check out soon. Perhaps The Missus and I can venture over there this week.

What ever happened to the plans for a Rodizio in downtown Lincoln?  I haven ‘t seen any mention of it lately.

Good question. It was reported in Biz Buzz back in September. I’ve asked Matt Olberding and I’ll let you know if he replies.

I happened to drive past the former Bennigans on Highway 2 by Menard’s yesterday and noticed it has a sign that says Florio’s Italian Steakhouse. Granted, I’ve not been by there in months as I am not a Walmart/Sam’s shopper so this is probably not news to anyone but me. I wondered when something would go into the Bennigan’s location. I am sure it was locked up in the bankruptcy courts for a long time.

Can’t say if it’s still going to be a Rodizio, but they definitely are working in that space. Steel is going up.

That same Biz Buzz noted that an Irish Pub was planned for the old Lazlo’s entry. But the Telesis web site lists that storefront for sale.
