I Need An Excuse to Go to Bethany

By: Mr. Wilson on January 29, 2010
Quick, somebody give me an excuse to go to Bethany so I can sneak over to the new Bethany Cafe. It is being run by Norma Chapman, formerly of Mexicali Bullfrog fame. I was pretty bummed to see the frog bite the dust, so I'm eager to see what Chapman has cooking this time. Have any of you been to Bethany Cafe since it opened in December? How was it?

You could visit the Bethany Library.

I was pumped to see it open, but I’m confused by the menu.  I NEED to go check it out too.  I loved the Frog.

You could report on the usability, cleanliness and appropriateness of routes while getting there on StarTran, as 25 cent fares start Monday, and continue for the rest of February.

Interesting proposal! Let’s say I were to leave my house at 8:00am…

If I were to take the “direct” route I would need to take four different buses to get there. I would catch the #50 just north of 48th and Highway 2 around 8:10. I would get off at 48th and Calvert around 8:20-8:25. There I would catch the #40 around 8:40 or so. It would be a short trip: I would get off moments later at Van Dorn. Then I would grab the #56 between 9:15 and 9:20. I would take the #56 to Gateway, where we are due to arrive at 9:30. Next up is the #44. Now, the #44 is supposed to leave Gateway at 9:30—the same time as my arrival. Hopefully I’m lucky and the #44 will wait for me. If not, I have to sit around until 10:40. Finally, after a long detour, I arrive at Cotner and Vine just before 9:55 (or 11:05). From there it’s about a quarter mile walk to the cafe.

If I were willing to walk a total of a little over a mile I could get away with just using the #50 and the #56. Total time would end up roughly the same.

If I were willing to go Downtown, I would still catch the #50 to start the journey. I would arrive at 11th and N at 8:45. There I would catch the #44 at 9:10 and ... well crud, I arrive at Cotner & Vine at 9:55, just like before.

Total time required to take the bus: 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes. Total cost: $0.25.

Total time to drive the 4.8 miles from my house to the restaurant: 15 minutes. Total cost: $0.52 (assuming 25MPG and $2.70/gallon).

Total time to travel by bike: approx. 30 minutes. Total cost: $0.00.

Total time to walk, at 3 miles per hour: 1 hour 40 minutes. Total cost: $0.00.

If I were really dedicated I would try each method and write up a comparison. If I weren’t so busy with work I’d be all over that!

I live up in this area and stopped in Bethany Cafe for a quick bite to eat last week. The food was decent and the service was friendly and prompt. The decor of the place leaves a lot to be desired but the food and service make it worth a visit.

I think you should send the bus vs. car vs. bike comparison to the Public Works department. We really need to revamp the bus system in this town if we want to be considered a competitive place for businesses to relocate.
