Miers?
I don’t know anything about this person. And apparently, no one else does either (yet). If I were to bet money, I would say that makes her a no-pass. At least Roberts had a record that could be scrutinized and - in many bipartisan quarters - admired for intellectual consistency. Miers is apparently a Bush family insider and that alone is a negative in the minds of many. Its one thing to be nominated by Bush and have a relatively moderate record, like Roberts. Its another to be nominated by Bush, and have no public record. I’m guessing the dems will tear into her during the senate hearings and she will be borked. An early prediction…

What’s especially impressive is the backlash from the Right. The Right is, to put it bluntly, pissed off at Bush’s selection.
I’ll give Bush credit. It takes cojones to nominate a buddy to an important post so soon after one of his other unqualified buddy hires—one Michael Brown—went down in flames. Cronyism in response to complaints about cronyism is, well, it’s an interesting strategy.
By the way, while we’re on the topic of Miers, would somebody tell the AP their bias is showing? Their stories throughout the day have said everything short of “She’s a complete idiot!” OK, their coverage hasn’t been quite that bad. But it’s been close.

Mr. Wilson, David Frum quoted her as saying Bush was the most brilliant man she’d ever met, so either she is a complete idiot or she surrounds herself with really dumb men.
Personally I think she’s a sacrificial lamb. She doesn’t have a chance of being confirmed. The American Spectator is reporting Republican staffers on the judiciary committee saying she won’t get out of committee. If she’s gonna get Borked it’s from the right.
The right-wing blogs are up in arms. They thought Roberts was the moderate appointee and the next one would be akin to Roy Moore. All I can say is pass the popcorn.

I agree with the sacrificial lamb reasoning, but I still think its gonna be the dems who take her apart. The repubs (even though some may not be pleased with the nomination) can then sit back and say “look - the pro-abortionists are abusing the advise and consent process.” Irregardless, I would not want to be in her shoes right now.
