Horror

Have you seen yesterday’s take on Omaha and Nebraska in the New York Times yet?

Before you recoil in horror at the thought of living in Omaha, a city of 414,000 souls, consider that this year Money magazine ranked it seventh of the nation’s 10 best big cities to live in, ahead of New York City, which ranked 10th. O.K., now you may recoil in horror.

I wonder: do the coastal “elite” (gag) smell the stench of condescension? Or is it like b.o., in that you don’t easily notice your own while those you subject to it wince in embarrassment on your behalf?

These stories come out every couple of years to give Nebraskans something to feel good about.

As a former member of the coastal elite (or does one remain a lifelong member by proxy), you honestly don’t notice.  It is much like b.o.  You don’t give places like Nebraska (flyover country, a term I detest) much thought, so you don’t give much thought to the impact that those words might have.

Honestly, most New Yorkers (and Northeasterners in general...painting with a broad brush here) don’t have much of a concept of permanently living outside of the area.  It isn’t something they can really fathom doing and can’t really see why anyone else would do so either.

This is simply based on my observations, and, like I said, is totally painting with a broad brush.  These are great people and it says nothing of their personal traits.

Love this quote:

“The three answers you hear most often from Nebraskans are: (1) quality of life; (2) good schools; (3) wouldn’t moving be kind of a bother?”

I would add “But it’s so expensive other places!”

I didn’t think it was all that negative of an article. I’m definitely gonna read “The Quality of Life Report” now.
