Good TV

Does anyone watch Louie on FX? This has to be the freshest and most inventive show on cable TV right now. Unfortunately for me, I missed most of the first season’s episodes, but have caught all of this season so far. Louie is basically an autobiographical comedy about the real life of a “Louis CK” that is very similar to Louis CK’s actual life.

If the show’s humor is based on any archetype, I would say that it would be sort of a more twisted and subversive version of Woody Allen. But beyond that, Louie really defies conventions and crosses genres. I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that the show is also directed and written by Louis CK. I first heard about Louie from Marc Maron’s excellent WTF podcast.

Anyway, I’d say Louie is perhaps the best show out there now, competing with Breaking Bad. Though sadly, after the last three brilliant seasons, I fear that Breaking Bad has now started following a predictable story arc. I hope I am wrong.

Louie is on the FX channel on Thursday evenings at 9:30. It is after that bizarre show with Frodo and some talking Australian dog.

I have been enjoying Louie very much this season. I think that season one was good, but this season is really going for some great mixture of dark comedy with deep human commentary and a lot of time he goes in a completely different direction than that which I expect, which keeps it fresh.

As for Breaking Bad, I would have to agree that it is starting to get more predictable, which is unfortunate.

AMC wanted the next and final season of Breaking Bad to be only 6-8 episodes as they have put much of their resources into Mad Men. Sony and Vince Gillian even thought of taking the show to FX to finish the story. Sony and AMC just came to a agreement on a full 16 episode final season just recently.
Things have gotten a little predictable but hopefully next year will end with a bang for Breaking Bad.

I watched Louie for a bit of the first episode but I guess I didn’t give it a chance. May have to check it out again.

PS
Always Sunny in Philadelphia returns on the 15th.
People love it or hate it, but well worth a look.

I was pretty impressed with this last Sunday’s episode, particularly the lengthy flashback with Gustavo Fring. It looks like they are building up to a crescendo with Fring and Hank.
