Humans Being
Tornado season. A time of year Mr. Wilson and I know a little about. Iowa just got nailed last night, right around where I used to live for a few years. How did some University of Iowa students react?
“The Liquor House opened up like a can of tuna, and all my friends ran up and started taking liquor,” said UI senior Sam Ehlinger as he meandered through the Pedestrian Mall around 10 p.m. Thursday.
What a classic quote. GO hawks.
The World Is Flat
Today the Council of Europe’s body investigating alleged “extraordinary rendition” through COE territories announced that such alleged flights did occur, but without providing a lot of detail. This is something we’ve been following on and off for a few months now. The allegation being that – either through act or omission – COE nations allowed an important allied nation (i.e. the USA) to transport people through their jurisdictions for torture in non-European nations. It will be interesting to see how the Strasbourg Court proceeds with this.
In other Council of Europe news, the Parliamentary Assembly wants to get together with FIFA in preparation for this summer’s World Cup side show. I look forward to a detailed DMB sports report on this phenomenon.
The Departed

Martin Scorsese. The man can do no wrong? I recently found out that he is remaking a pretty good HK cop/gangster film - “Infernal Affairs” for a 2006 release starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and others. The trailer for the original movie is here (US release) but little has come out so far on Scorsese’s secretive version. Another one to add to the list of must sees for 2006. It will probably come out in the fall. That seems to be the general rule for good movies.
