The wife and I are in the mood to try our luck at cooking some seafood.  Is Midwest Seafood still open by Smokehouse Deli?  I’ve never been to it, from what I heard the seafood is great, but when they moved I remember the LJS had an article about them moving, hopefully they are still in business.  If anyone has info that’d be great, also if anyone is a regular buyer there and has suggestions let me know.  Thanks!

Yep, Midwest Seafood is still at 48th and Highway 2, next to Smokehouse Deli. I haven’t been there yet, either, but I’ve heard positive things. Let us know what you think.

Boomer I visited there once when it was up on N 27th and it seemed fine to me. I got the impression that they don’t do a whole lot of walk-in business however, but mainly advance ordering. That was years ago so I have no idea what its like now. But yes I have only heard good things. This gives me some reason to check it out one of these days before the summer ends. Its crab season now so maybe I’ll check them out and see what they have (or can order in).

I used to go to Midwest Seafood all the time and it was great!  They had all the same fish that I got when I lived in southern Louisiana and, oh, so delicious.  But then their relative who did all their fishing for them went missing in Hurricane Katrina (!!--no joke; isn’t that just horrible????).  After that, their selection was much reduced.  I don’t know who supplies them anymore, but it’s just not the same.  I like that it’s a family-run business, though.  I will say that they sold me some fish called escolar, and it made my husband and son sick for days.  It wasn’t spoiled fish, though.  Escolar just has a substance in it that makes some people very sick.  So if they offer you escolar, be careful.  I didn’t like it, so I only had a bite, but my husband and son ate quite a bit of it and they suffered mightily after that.
