What a surprise!  The Penalty Box Pub has good food at a great value and it’s currently one of my favorite best-kept-secrets in Lincoln.

We went on a Saturday night and I had the weekend special, a small NY Strip steak with fries for $5 and change.  They have some week-day lunch specials that also sound good.  My only complaint was with the service.  In the pub’s defense, it was supper on St. Patrick’s Day and the wait staff may have been geared up for drinking customers, not dine-in customers.

Still, our waitress never gave us refills and she was late with the check.  The only way she could have seemed less interested in us as customers was if she completely ignored us which, thankfully, she did not.

The pub has great potential and I can’t wait to go back and try their lunch specials.

Y’know, I have lived near Penalty Box for a couple years now, and I still haven’t been there. I need to walk over there one of these days.

And seriously: a NY strip for $5? And it wasn’t shoe leather? That’s impressive.

It was pretty good for the price!  You have to go in with the right frame of mind though.  This is not fine dining, it’s good bar food at a great price.  They aren’t putting a lot of money into overhead, (read: they could spruce up a little but my advice is don’t do it if it causes your prices to go up) but I was quite pleasantly surprised.  I have driven by it for years as well and this was the first time I’ve eaten there.  My only advice would be to notch up the service, we didn’t feel all that welcome there (although it was a hell of a lot better than getting yelled at by Norm at M&N;Sandwich).

Has anyone tried Cappy’s?  I think it’s across the street in that strip mall with the Sinclair station.

I went to Cappy’s to watch one of NU’s NCAA tournament volleyball matches. I can’t say I was very impressed. I didn’t try their pizza, though, which is what they got thumbs-up for early on.

I haven’t tried food at the Pub. If you want to have a couple drinks in public on the south side of town, this is it. The friendly staff, specials, and low prices are great for some drinks with your pals.
