My bank account says I don’t need to look at any new toys right now. I’d best stay away wink

Yeah. I am very tempted to buy the new iPod nano with the 24 hour battery life. I use my nano so often that I have to charge it a few times a week. These continually updated iPods are great, but its frustrating if you just bought one and learn that it is outdated a few months later. What I do like though are the gradual improvements to iTunes. The little things like adding a category section for podcasts make it a great application, and I’m a pretty voracious podcast consumer.

I’m using a 4th Generation iPod (with the grey screen) that I’ve had for a few years now.  It’s still plenty awesome and works great, but twenty gigabytes just isn’t cutting it any more.  Thanks to the price drop I am thinking of picking up the 80 Gb model, to future proof myself from an ever expanding library.  However, right now Best Buy has the Fifth Generation iPods on clearance, $249 for the 30 Gb and $299 for the 60 Gb, which is really tempting too.

Interesting. I take it you’ve discovered how to rip iPods then if you are using one as a back-up. For me, I’ve taken to just purchasing a few external HDs to back up my files, one for music and another for everything else. I think I probably have about 50 gigs of music on my music external HD, and of course I keep it on my computer’s HD as well. What I don’t have plans for is to purchase a video iPod. I just can’t see myself in situations where that would be useful or entertaining, and I’m not a photo guy either. For me, a 4 gig nano is enough, and I update playlists and podcasts on a daily basis basically.

Nah I use regular external hard drives to back up my stuff.  (Western Digital MyBooks, 250 Gig each, connected by firewire, looks like books with creepy glowing HAL eyes.) My music has actually exceeded 20 gigs and so that’s why I need the iPod upgrade.  I’m one of those anal people who, if I’m going to have some of my music with me, I may as well have it all.  Video for me is a nice bonus, but not a necessity.  Lincoln’s public transportation system isn’t such that I’d use it, and there aren’t many other “sitting around bored with my iPod” moments that I have to devote to watching video on it.  However I do download tv shows from iTunes (and bit torrent, hehe) so I can imagine moments where it would come in handy.

I think I spoke to soon about loving iTunes and all that. I downloaded iTunes 7 yesterday, and like many others, found out that this version has a host of problems - mine specifically being that it wouldn’t even recognize my nano. Today I spent some time going through the apple boards and finally found a solution that allowed me to delete iTunes 7 and return to an earlier version. What an annoyance. Its things like this that almost make me want to go out and purchase a Rio carbon or a phone mp3 player.

I always wait for a couple of updates before I use anything from Apple.  Most of their app’ releases are glorified beta-apps.  When iTunes forst came out I imediatly downloaded it and I ended up having to completly erase my HD and zeroing it out (tried just erasing and it didn’t work).  I complained on their BB and was banned for several months.

GOT - I had fun earlier today. I spent over an hour reinstalling iTunes because it either started crashing seconds after opening it or wouldn’t recognize my iPod. I have now removed and re-installed iTunes 7* three times in the past few weeks. Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I’m curious.  Do you have any other mp3 apps on your system?  I’ve heard iTunes is predatory… in that if there is another mp3 type of application the preferences will tangle with each other (or something like that… I’m not a programmer).

Yes, I have winamp and real player. Both still seem to work fine however, its just iTunes that is driving me crazy. I love my iPod and have had iPods for a few years now, but this iTunes 7* release has just been a real frustrating disappointment for me. By the way, why exactly did Apple ban you from their boards?
