Authorities have dropped charges against a second suspect in the Stock murders in Murdock, according to the Journal Star.

I hope the newspaper considers an in-depth piece about the affect of the arrest and charges, then dropping them, has had on a family so prevalent in Murdock. I’m sure it has been an emotional roller coaster.

“What are we going to do here,” she said, “with all these people without their mothers?“

Marisela Raymundo is too small to grasp what’s going on. All she knows, some 30 hours after agents descended on the massive Swift plant on Grand Island’s eastern outskirts, is that she’s still waiting for her mother to come home.

Children came home from school to find that their parents are gone. Some people have no idea where their family members have gone.

Why does immigration sweep in to punish people who are WORKING.
What about illegals who are breaking the law and taking advantage of the system in illegal ways?
What about the people who provided illegal documentation?
What about companies who illegally employ these people (or turn a blind eye to illegal documentation)?
Does immigration really believe that people in Mexico are just waiting to live out their life long dream to live in Grand Island, Nebraska (or name your Midwest town)? There is a bigger issue of recruiting illegal workers.

It just seems cruel to me to sweep in on these working families so close to the holidays and do nothing for the children left behind.

Radley Balko over at The Agitator picked up my tip about the police shooting in Richardson County. He makes the three observations I have made:

1) Note the gag order. Why is that necessary? Anything to do with the fact that the case involves a police officer?

2) We have a 51-year-old woman allegedly buying painkillers from a nursing home patient. Were the tactics the police used really appropriate, given the suspects? Was it necessary to spring from the bushes with guns drawn?

3) Seems like a stretch that the officer’s gun would accidentally go off and score a direct hit on the suspect as she was driving away. Particularly if police procedure here is, as it is in most of the country, for the officer to keep finger off the trigger unless he intends to shoot.
