The Doc needs your help
Head mens basketball coach Doc Sadler has called out to husker nation for their help:
“I need a lot of help from y’all,” he said. “We’ve got to get people in this place Wednesday night. No question, this is the best team we’ve played this year.”
“We need help,” Sadler said. “We need this place packed.”
That team? North Texas. Not exactly Duke or Kansas or even Creighton.
But...Doc does bring up a good point. Crowds for the 3 no name games have been 6,701; 5,823; and 6,032. The Creighton game was a sellout, 13,112.
So I ask you Husker Nation...you got the new coach that you wanted, the style of play has changed, they are 4-0...why aren’t you going to the games?

I was there Monday to see a sloppy victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluffs. I can’t afford to go to many games but I might pony up the cash to take the family to a couple more games this season.
I like Doc Sadler a lot. He reminds me of how Devaney must have been when he first came to Nebraska. Building grassroots support and a tough but lovable coach. I hope he does well here. So far, he’s done an incredible job.

I like how when he’s getting interviewed on TV, he turns and looks into the camera like he’s a professional wrestler.

So far, he’s done an incredible job.
Four games into the season? I admit the win versus Creighton was a good win, but the rest of the wins have been against pancakes. I’ll let the Big 12 season gauge whether or not he’s doing an incredible job, not the soft non-conference schedule.
...but then again, people insisted up until the day he left that Barry Collier was doing a good job, even though the program torpedoed with him in charge. I still think we should bring back Danny Nee.

Man, Danny Nee would be awesome.
I wish someone would give that guy a radio talkshow.

Are you kidding Dave K?
He’s taken a depleted and injury-ridden roster and put together a solid 5-1 record so far, with a win against a Top-25 team in the process. I think that’s an incredible job against those odds, even if some of the games are exhibition games. And look at the playing time the student manager is getting. Incredible. Lots of room to improve, but still incredible.
You may have read too much into my post. I didn’t say the team would play incredibly against Big XII opponents, but so far it’s been great. Maybe you just like quoting me. I’m flattered.

Not kidding at all. Praising Sadler for doing ‘an incredible job’ is like saying Callahan is doing wonderfully after beating Western Illinois. Okay forget that point.
A 5-1 record is solid, but the opponents have not been. Collier had a few good early seasons, only to be destroyed when the real opponents came along. No one with a brain ever said he did ‘an incredible job’.

Uh, I think he’s 4-0, not 5-1. Tonight is game 5. Not to quibble.

I was counting the two exhibition games vs. UNK and S. Ill.
Wins vs. UNK, UNO, Creighton, Lubbock-Christian and Ark-Pine Bluff and a loss vs. S. Ill.-Edwardsville.

and a loss vs. S. Ill.-Edwardsville.
That makes my point better than anything I could say.

My bad… as I said, “not to quibble”.
I think considering what was left in the cupboard, and the number of injuries the team started the year with, a 4-0 start is incredible. Now, I’m not ready to annoint him the second coming of Coach K or anything, but it’s the best start in years (if not decades). If they can get through the Big 12 in the middle of the pack, I’d be impressed. I like what I see of the coach so far, and I think his recruiting will be a huge plus, but it may take a couple of years to see the results on the court. As a fan, I’d be thrilled to see a team that consistently finishes in the top third of the conference, squeeks out a conference title once every few years, makes pretty regular NCAA tourney appearances, and makes it once in a blue moon to the Sweet 16. Oh yes, and kcik the snot out of Creighton about 8 or 9 times out of 10. LOL. I think that’s all attainable—I am not foolish enough to predict national championships. Props to Doc so far for bringing some enthusiasm to things.

Agreed Fletch. Looks like the Sadler is off to a good start compared to previous Husker coaches.
According to today’s Journal Star:
“Coach Doc Sadler’s Huskers improved to 5-0 with the win, the best start for a first-year Husker coach since 1919, when Paul Schlisser went 6-0 to begin the 1919-20 campaign.”

Doc asked for people to attend last night’s game and nearly 10,000 showed up.
I went to the game with a friend and the Huskers looked much sharper last night than they did Monday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Almost like two different teams. It’s great to see the team play with fundamentals. And they’re scrappy!

I see Marcus Perry is on the bench, again, for a stress fracture in his foot. That’s not good.
