Coming off a series win over Tex-ass (2 of 3) Nebraska leads the Big 12 standings going into this weekend series with Texas Tech. Nebraska is cruising right now at 33-6 overall and 12-3 in the conference. They have one of the highest RPI’s in the nation and are an early favorite to return to the College World Series. Nebraska has gotten super performances from it’s dominant pitching staff.  Defense is as good, if not better than previous years.  The offense is the big surprise this year.  Many thought that with the exit of Alex Gordon and Curtis Ledbetter that the offense is suffering. But the are scoring almost 7 runs/game. That is about what last years team scored so that has too look good for head coach Mike Anderson.

The problem this year might be last years pitching MVP.  Joba Chamberlin has struggled mightily this year. While he was an untouchable 10-2 last year with a 2.81 ERA. This year he has scratched and clawed his way to a 5-3 record with a 3.35 ERA.  Joba has been battling some injury problems this year but if he was 100% healthy, then he should be stumbling like this. Now no one should have expected the super human effort that we got him from last year, but he has been far from consistent this year. I really think it might be beneficial for coach Anderson to shake up the rotation a bit for the next couple of series. If Nebraska is to make a deeper run in the CWS this year, we’ll need everyone at their top form, including Joba.  Move Joba to the Sunday spot where he doesn’t have the pressure of the Friday night start so he can gain some confidence back. Maybe for this week and next weeks series go Watson/Dorn/Joba.  And then gradually move Joba back into the Friday roll if he earns it.
