Game 6: Nebraska 23 Baylor 14

Well I don’t know if you can call it a road game because almost a quarter of the 40k fans there were Nebraska fans but...it wasn’t in Lincoln so technically it was a road game.

Nebraska wins a fairly uneventful game. Nothing about this game really stood out. Nebraska only amassed 350 yards on offence. While good...it’s not really great. Nebraska did however finish with more rushing yards than passing yards which is a good sign. Baylor got a little over 250 yards of offence and only 50 of those were on the ground. The secondary looked a little better, but still needs to improve if this team wants to continue onto bigger and better things. Probably the star of the game was Jordan Congdon. He’s starting to assert himself as a more reliable kicker. His first 40+yarder as a Husker was a good sign in that the coaches might start trusting him more in the longer distances. I can understand going for it on 4th and short in between the 40-30 but it really would be nice to know that if we’re in side the 35, that our kicker will be almost automatic. After a shaky start, Congdon might finally be coming around. A good sign onthe offensive side of the ball is the length of Nebraska’s drives. Nebraska had 18, 14 and 11 play drives. Now although you want to come throughwith TD’s on those (all ended with FG’s ) the demoralizing effect it has on a D takes effect later in the game. Not to mention the fatigue factor. Not only does it keep their D on the field it keeps our stud D unit off the field. 3rd down conversions are still a big problem (6 of 16) but 4th downs were perfect against Baylor (3 of 3)

Next is a much tougher road test vs. Mizzou. Mizzou is selling commemorative shirts for the game and asking for a black out. Why this game I really don’t know, they aren’t as good as they have been in past years and what they will gain from a w
in isveryminimal at this point. One key for the Tigers is the health of Brad Smith their all-everything QB. He is a Vince Young-type player. His most dangerous weapon is his legs. Missouri made a HUGE mistake in the Nebraska game and all of last year making Smith more of a pass first QB than a run first QB. He was hit in the head near the end of the ISU game and it’s still up in the air if he will play or not. Nebraska is better suited to corral Smith than they were last year but if Cody Hodges of TTech gave us problems with a mobile QB then Smith will be a big challenge to coral. This will be the first true road test for the team.

As Mr. Wilson pointed out we are #23 in theBCS.  I really think that Nebraska fans at this point need to put aside the rankings and future potential of the team just worry about the next game. One game at a time.
