Game 2: Nebraska 31 Wake Forest 3

Coaches say that the biggest improvement on the year is usually from game one to game two.  If that was our best improvement, then there are problems in Husker Nation.  The good: the defense.  For a second week in a row they carried the team.  Not one, not two but three defensive touchdowns which is a team record.  The linebackers are outstanding.  Cory McKeon is one of my favorite players because of his care free attitude and reckless play on the field.  The secondary got a better challenge this week and for the most part was up to the test.  The loss of Steve Octavian, while unfortunate, doesn’t seem to be affecting the defense one bit.  The bad: the passing game.  To me, Zach Taylor is showing flashes.  There are passes which fit the west coast offence perfectly.  He is hitting some slant patterns, post and comeback routes that are placed perfectly.  And then sometimes his passes aren’t great.  Zach is also the victim of a horribly under achieving wide receiver unit.  There were as many 6 dropped passes on Saturday.  Had those been caught, people might not be as worried about the offence.  This part can easily be improved, and needs to because the WCO depends on it.  The ugly: the offensive line.  This is bad, real bad.  For this new offence to work, this unit needs to make holes and protect the QB.  They are doing neither right now.  The problem isn’t the running game, it’s the line.  They just aren’t doing the job that they need to do.  If this area doesn’t improve dramatically, this won’t be that great of a season.

Pittsburgh comes to town next Saturday.  This should be a win for the Huskers because any team that loses to Ohio isn’t that good.  Pittsburgh was over rated to begin the season and a loss to the Fighting Franks
only confirmed that.

“This should be a win for the Huskers because any team that loses to Ohio isn’t that good.”

That quote is just begging to be rubbed in your face on Saturday. grin

It won’t happen.  Pittsburgh looked PATHETIC against Ohio.  Their offence was totally inept.  I don’t see them producing more offence against a defence that just scored three times in a game.  As for thier defence, yes they held Ohio to no offencive touchdowns but...it’s Frank.  How difficult can his offence be?

The beauty of Frank’s lone offensive drive against Pitt was that he ran 7 minutes and change off the clock just to kick a field goal.  Just like the good old days.
