George Mason, the #11 seed in the Washington D.C. bracket, has qualified for the Final 4. George Mason, out of the Colonial Athletic Association, defeated top seededUConn 86-84 in overtime. Where is George Mason you ask? Just southwest of Washington D.C. the campus was opened in 1957 and boasts a enrollment of 29,000. You can learn more about George Mason here.

George Mason has tied for the highest seeded team ever to qualify for the final 4. Since the field expanded to 64 in 1985 only two teams have qualified for the final 4 as a double digit seed.  LSU in 1986 as an 11 seed and now George Mason.  The highest seeded team to ever win a national title was Villanova in 1985 as an #8 seed.

George Mason will face the winner of the Villanova/Florida game on April 1st.

March Madness

IT’S AWESOME BABY!!!  WITH A CAPITAL A!

That’s right the big dance kicks off Thursday with 16 games.  That’s right 16 games in one day.  For any sports fan, it really doesn’t get any better than March Madness.  To me, these early round games are the best.  It has the most potential for upsets, it has the most potential for buzzer beaters, and there are a lot of games.  Start around 11am and end at 11pm (or later) with a 2 hour break in the middle.  Now lots of people like to bet in pools, in fact, it’s probably the second most gambled on sporting event besides the Super Bowl.  Now if you’re looking for last minute tips for filling out your bracket, then this is probably the wrong place to look.  But I’ll give you spme sound beginner advice with 10 tips on winning your pool (or at least do better than throwing a dart at the wall):

McCray suspended

January 28, 2006 at 12:17am By: D.M.B. Posted in D.M.B. Sports Report

Joe McCray was suspended indefinitely Friday.  For what reason Coach Collier won’t say but McCray’s personality this season has been less than stellar.  He came into camp ~20 pounds overweight and has yet to regain his form from his stellar freshman season last year.  He also was punished for team rules violations during the Iowa St. game and was a less than gracious teammate during the end of Nebraska’s bad loss to Colorado.

From what I can tell, this will be a good thing.  Other teammates seem to think that he was a cancer on the team.  We’ll find out if this is a good thing or a bad thing in the coming weeks.

The first game without Joe is Saturday as the boys take on Missouri at home @ 3pm.  This will also be a battle of the hot seats.
