Why is Lincoln’s Crime Rate So High (But Not Really)?

By: Mr. Wilson on July 13, 2009
Want to know why Lincoln's rate of certain crimes is so low, while our rate in other crime categories is so high? It may be due to reporting. That is, Lincoln may simply report more minor instances of certain crimes. For example, here's a list of stuff that got stolen on July 1. Can you imagine cops in LA fretting about the disappearance of a pair of size 7 underwear? It makes you wonder: LPD Chief Tom Casady likes to point out how small Lincoln's police force is relative to other communities. If we were to add those officers, and if our existing officers already have enough time to deal with the theft of, say, a newspaper, what exactly would all of those additional officers do? I know I'm simplifying things a fair bit. Nevertheless, let's face it: LPD gets quite a lot done despite -- or because of? -- their numbers.

The kinds of things people report are interesting.

I’m trying to decide if I should file a complaint of my own.  This time it would be against the LPD itself.  Two times in a week strange things have been happening on our block.  We live right on the SW edge of the East Campus neighborhood.

One night, what appeared to be a routine pull-over for speeding was accompanied by two (!) police cruisers who proceeded to park right in front of our house with their lights flashing.  I don’t think anyone was arrested.

What happened yesterday was what got me thinking a little harder about this.  I think someone had an accident on 33rd street.  When we peeked out of our window, we saw 4 (!!!) police cruisers parked on either side of the street (no lights flashing this time).  I don’t think there was any emergency response to this incident.  The drivers of one vehicle were out of their car, sitting on the grass.  No one seemed to be getting arrested.

Anyway, this just seemed like overkill to me.  I don’t think of our neighborhood as a high-crime location.  Any ideas about reporting something like this?  Or should I just grin and bear it.  If we need that many officers, maybe they ought to all ride in the same car so they quit wasting gas.  I don’t know.  Car pool?  Get a van instead of a cruiser?
