Where Am I?

By: Mr. Wilson on July 7, 2010
Take a walk down memory lane with me. In the car are my grandma, my mom, my sister, and me. We pull into a large parking lot. I see the sign and get excited. I love coming here for lunch. We get out of the car and walk inside. It's busy. We wait in line. I'll take that. And that. NO! Not that! And that. And mashed potatoes with lots of gravy. We sit and eat. I'm still hungry. I turn on a light. More food arrives. I eat it, but I'm still hungry. My mom rolls her eyes but my grandma tells me to go ahead. I turn on the light again. More mashed potatoes and gravy, please! I eat it and I'm stuffed. Later I have to try on clothes. I grumble, but that's the price to be paid for the food. Where am I?

I have no idea of the light thing. Must have been before my time in Lincoln. I was going to guess Bishop’s Buffet at Gateway.

I was going to say Bishops too. I remember some sort of thing on the tables that told them to hit us again.

Yep, I was thinking of Bishop Buffet! I used to love that place. From what I’ve been told, my memories of it give the place credit it does not deserve. Oh well.

Hopefully I didn’t make up the lights on the table. In my memory—a foggy source to be sure!—there were little lights on each table. When you wanted more food, you turned on the light and somebody would come to your table to see what you needed. Apparently going back up to the buffet by yourself was considered too taxing.

Yes, those lights did in fact exist.

All I remember about Bishop’s Buffet was that a LOT of elderly people ate there, and that they had a crap-ton of Jello-themed desserts in the case.

I have fond memories of Bishop’s downtown buffet. I cannot recall the location, perhaps it was on P Street. I went there as a child with my family. I remember my mom always telling me my eyes were too big for my stomach! I believe they also gave away Pepsin gum after your meal.

the name of a bar that adjoined the old Scott’s Pancake House downtown? It was the first place I ever tasted beer cheese soup, and it was great! And exactly what corner was Scott’s on? I’m thinking 14th and L, but most likely am wrong.
