When to Plow

By: Mr. Wilson on January 4, 2008
Personally, I strongly approve of Lincoln's policy of not plowing residential streets unless more than four inches of snow falls. Most of the time that policy works out in our favor. True, occasionally we'll get a situation like we have now. Mix some ice, a little snow, plenty of cold weather over a long timespan, and a dose of shade, and you'll end up with side streets that are either ice rinks or bumpy messes. I choose to look at those situations from a glass-half-full perspective: at least it forces drivers to slow down in residential neighborhoods. Do you think Lincoln's policy is a good one? How would you amend it? (And how would you pay for your amendments, if necessary?)

I agree with the policy as well.
I have heard many folks complain over the holidays and it simply boggles my mind.  It seems some think a plow could magically remove the ice.

My street got a bunch of gravel on it, which is pretty cool.  It does help, but on my bike it is scary.  I get enough speed going to coast across it and clip out and brace for a fall.  have not fallen yet.

I agree with the policy, but I have an idea that may help.
1) Keep people off the streets so that…
2) All of us with snow blowers can blow out the street in front of our house and if we’re nice neighbors the neighbors with no snow blowers so that…
3) Maybe we can get our taxes lowered so that…
4) We can eliminate some of those who are always complaining about taxes and how bad the streets are on their street after it snows.

I think the policy is sound and wouldn’t change it. The problem we have now is that there are pockets of neighborhoods where the ice ruts are so severe that it’s dangerous to drive. Not much you can do about that now.

I sure as heck wouldn’t want to bike on those roads. BeerorKid is a mad man! Bike on, BorK!

I disagree. The state of our side streets is treacherous. I am embarrassed when my friends from Denver and Minneapolis visit. I am willing to pay for the peace of mind that I can get down the side streets near my place without sliding around. We haven’t had snowfall in weeks. This is ridiculous.

good melt going on today.  I was lucky to have my fender on for the lunch trip.

I did a few weeks of bumming rides from the wife, but she likes to be to work on time which is lame.  I am only slightly crazy not insane.

For a little while I thought LJS had banned me from posting, but it showed up hours later.  They turned down my snarkiness yesterday :(

My lovely wife and I were riding around looking at Christmas lights last weekend.  The high-dollar neighborhood streets were equally bad as ours.  This is really a case of you get what you are willing to pay for.

Exactly, and I’m willing to deal with messy side streets to save a few bucks on my taxes. I can still get to work, I just have to be more cautious when I drive.

I think that’s probably the most important thing to remember. Although living on a major arterial I never have to worry about it getting plowed. I just have to worry about making sure the snowblower doesn’t blow stuff back out onto the street.

Every street should be plowed over at least once after a snow.  Its to avoid exactly what is happening.  It doesn’t have to be the same day, it doesn’t even have to be the next day but every street can be plowed AT LEAST once in a weeks time.
