What’s the Matter with Ray’s Lawn and Home Care?

Once again, Ken ”The Hammer” Svoboda’s landscaping business is in the news. And once again, the business is in trouble for not doing something it was supposed to do. This time the business is on the hook for nearly $75,000 in state sales taxes and interest. Ouch. Seems like the management at Ray’s is costing the business some serious cash. They might want to look into that.

I like how nothing is ever his fault.

I’m not saying that we can believe every word he says is true, but I will say this. The tax code is confusing and ambiguous in many places.
I owned a retail business in Lincoln a few years ago. We sold bottled Coke products. It’s exceptionally confusing to know in the NE tax code whether those should be taxed, or not taxed. Think about it - there are places you go and buy a bottled water/pop and they charge you tax, and others that don’t. It’s hard to know. Therefore, I would presume it’s possible that there was confusion on whether to charge and collect taxes on certain services.
With all that said, I don’t feel that this is much of a story. If their was confusion, and tax lien was put in place, and it’s been paid, then I don’t really think it’s a big deal. If there was interest charged to him, but no penalties, the taxing body doesn’t consider it a big deal - they just want their money.
If he owes it, it should absolutely be paid. As long as he’s paying and not in default, I think it’s not a huge story. I am sure I am in the minority with that opinion.
