What a Riot!

By: Mr. Wilson on September 10, 2009
Better to be over-prepared than under-prepared I suppose, though the notion of LPD training for a riot in Lincoln does sound a little silly. I know, I know, it's only silly until the training is needed. It makes me wonder... I was a part of a riot of sorts in Downtown Lincoln once. I rode around in my friend's T-top Camaro for hours among thousands of Husker fans on a cold, January night after one of the Huskers' national championship victories. I even made it onto an Omaha television station's "congratulations Huskers" commercial, which earned me the nickname Party Boy from my track coaches. Good times, good times. When was Lincoln's last "real" riot? I suppose it's not unfair to consider some late-night O Street shenanigans a "riot"; certainly police have to be careful how they respond amidst all the people and the booze. Have we had any good political riots in Lincoln?

In the ‘70s I remember some riotous-like snowball fights on UNL campus…

1994:  The scene outside the state pen during Harold Otey’s execution.  It never turned violent, but the potential was probably there.  I remember a candlelight vigil juxtaposed with people bodysurfing.

1995: People pushing past security and tearing down the gates at Memorial Stadium after the Huskers’ bowl win. (ironically the goalposts weren’t even up)

2001: The after-bar crowd on O got crazier than usual and even smashed in a LPD cruiser window

2005:  Shoppers turned mob-like at Westfield Gateway’s food court grand opening and nearly trampled each other for the chance to win a $500 shopping spree

..those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

My inpractical knowledge of Lincoln in the 1890s doesn’t call up any riots. If this crazy murder didn’t cause some unruly mobs, I don’t know what would.

A couple of weeks ago, Liz Dorland from channel 3 in Omaha called the health care rally in Lincoln a “near riot.”

Those were the days. A fun, awesome night that was. I just wish I would have seen the commercial.

Why in the world are you evening watching Channel 3’s news? That newscast has gotten so bad, I don’t think there’s anything that can be done to save it. You could replace the anchors with Dan Rather and Diane Sawyer, and the sheeple of Omaha would still watch the dolts on WOWT and the decent newcast on KETV.
