Time Warner’s Digital Cable “Upgrade”

By: Mr. Wilson on January 10, 2007
I don't subscribe to Time Warner's digital cable, but I have heard that the new navigation software is no good. To add insult to injury, many subscribers lost cable altogether this morning. Did any of you suffer the outage? Is the new software as bad as advertised, or is it just different?

Oh, finally, just the topic I wanted to see!  How much bandwidth can I take up? Yes, I had an outage. Yes, the new software sucks. It’s different, sure, and change can always be hard. The problem is, it doesn’t work like the previous software. In other words, while the architecture may help the TWC people in the future, I am paying more now than I did last month for software that won’t do a fraction of what it used to. I have no problem with change, but this was a huge step backward. Shall I go on? I could list 20 more things that stink about it. LOL

I’m glad I don’t have cable anymore. Did you lose all your set to record programs? that would annoy the hell out of me.

As long at their cable internet doesn’t go down, I’m happy.

First it hit out normal DVR, then it took over out HD DVR a few weeks later.

- Deleted a bunch of our saved shows
- does not jump back a few secs after you fast forward
- not as much info in the guide
- does not mark shows as bing new, messes up recordings by re recording multiples of the same show
- problems canceling recordings
- all around slower
- cant set multiple power off timers
- old menu remembered sleep timer settings
- used to be able to leave hard drive on so it would have the last hour worth of stuff when you turn it on.
- no setting colors or banner duration
- favorites are hosed
- there is really no love for channel surfers
- when in guide if you change the volume you have to wait till the banner disapears till it takes effect.

Got some other good rants on my site about the stupid navigator.

I have heard multiple complaining about the upgrade.  Of course I’m too cheap to pay for digital cable (I got the internet for that), but just people from work, i’ve heard a couple of college students, middle aged fathers, and old guys complaining.  So I’m guessing the general concensus is that it sucks.

I’m just grumpy that for yet another year, us basic cable schlubs get an increase in charges without getting new channels (the six or seven new shopping channels they added to our line up definitely don’t count.)  At least my apartments charge a fixed rate so I’m not paying any more.

Don’t feel bad JWilt… I pay for Roadrunner, digital cable, 2 converter boxes, an HD DVR, and HBO and Skinemax, plus some sports programming, and the HD tier. All prices went up, and there are no new channels on any tier. Why I don’t just switch to satellite is beyond me. Add that to the resolutions list!

Eh.  I’m too stuck up for satellite.  Basic Cable at 30 bucks a month, a broadband internet connection, and Bit Torrent are all I need.

At first I was BEYOND ready to give TWC the benefit of the doubt.  When they did our regular DVR, it worked fine.  The next night, it stopped in the middle of recording a show and basically had a meltdown and reverted BACK to the old system.  The very next night, it did the same thing and went back to the new system and deleted all of my saved and future recordings.  RANDOM.  Customer service had no explanation.

My complaints are VERY similar to beerorkid’s issues.  At first, I was most upset with the fact that they made it clear that saved programs would not be deleted from the DVR and mine were.  I attributed it to my DVR being really old.  Then the download happened to the HD DVR and the deletions happened…but not to all of the programs.

Honestly, I am all for upgrades and I understand their desire to go to a proprietary technology for a wide range of reasons.  However, don’t do it at the expense of your customers’s enjoyment of the system.  A minor “change” is one thing, but a significant loss in quality is quite another.  Also, why do it when alternatives such as Dish are growing?

It isn’t something I lose sleep about or even get irritated with, but I just have to question the wisdom of the decision.  Oh well.  Cable is basically our entertainment budget, so we will likely suffer.

Funny.  I just cancelled cable TV the morning of the big outage so I didn’t notice it.  However, the night before I was getting messages that my cable box wasn’t authorized for service for no reason at all.

I do echo Beerorchid’s complaints almost point for point.

I don’t know if I’ll switch to another service or not.  I stopped watching most TV a month before I finally cancelled it.  I did notice Windstream is bundling dsl, dish and phone together for a pretty decent price.  Too bad you have to get a landline to qualify for the deal.  I’ve discovered I can watch most of what I want on the nets anyway.
