The Post Office is Closing. Do You Care?

By: Mr. Wilson on July 31, 2009
Do you care that three local post offices may close before the end of the year? I can't say that I do. I haven't been to a post office in years. We do our postal business at Hy-Vee. Besides, I'm torked at USPS right now; twice in the past couple weeks we've checked our mail to find an envelope open and contents of value missing. Grr.

The Uni Place Station is right on my way to work and I use it all of the time to mail packages. I’m sure that residents of the community will miss it. When I go there I am rarely the only customer. I have wondered how long it would remain open since it is a small station. I am surprised that the USPS hasn’t suspended Saturday mail delivery. I thought for sure that would be a luxury that we would lose first.

This will bring the people out of the woodwork that screamed when HyVee closed in University Place.

I don’t really care if they close. I maybe visit one in person once a year, and HyVee works for me just as well.

I can’t remember the last time I was at the post office.

If I’m remembering right, the day they were thinking about eliminating was Tuesday or Wednesday as it was their lightest day.

I’ve used the one in the NSOB a lot.  I’m sad to see one like that go.  I guess for me the question is, where do those people with PO boxes now go?

I use the one near 35th & O St, but it won’t be hard to work around it, since I hardly ever need to go to the post office.

I don’t go in a post office more than twice a year and then only to mail packages, but I think it’s kind of sad to see them close.

Also, if your mail is being tampered with, call the post office.  I had a problem with our mail a few years ago (receiving other people’s mail on a daily basis), and they went above and beyond to solve it.  They contacted me three times in the weeks after I called to complain to see if the issue had been resolved.  I thought that was pretty good customer service.

Yes, Fletch, we’ll come back “out of the woodwork” in Uni Place, because the issue is much larger than simply the closure of a post office.
If the Uni Place post office closes, then patrons will go to Havelock, which is right across from Russ’s. That threatens the Heartland Pantry, which we fought so hard for in our neighborhood.
Perhaps those of you who don’t live in, or appreciate, small town neighborhoods like Uni Place and Havelock can’t understand our reactions, but we’re trying to protect what we value in our neighborhood and city.
