The Mountain is High / The Valley is Low

StarTran is offering free rides on Friday. If you have ever wanted to give StarTran a test drive, Friday would be a good opportunity. I know I give StarTran a hard time now and then, but I did ride the bus daily for a few years back when I worked Downtown. I saved a tremendous amount of money on transportation expenses. Depending on where you live and work -- and that's the big catch with StarTran, isn't it? -- it may be an option you should really consider.

...And when, since its quite conceivable that you could take the bus to work and then have no way home because of their time schedule.

If they would extend their schedule hours, ditch the central DT hubbing, and allow partial commuters (bikes that can’t/don’t want to ride the whole way) they would probably do pretty well. Right now their cost isn’t worth their inconvenience. Who has an extra hour or more a day to wait around coming and going from DT?

What extra hour waiting downtown?  Nearly all the runs have a stop at the State Office Building and a stop at Gold’s, each within couple of minutes of each other.  If I take the bus to the Office Bldg, it’s usually only 5 minutes before the bus from Gold’s comes around.

I do agree, though, that running until 8:00 or 9:00 would be very convenient for many - like me who doesn’t enjoy walking or biking in the snow and ice but would still like to go to the UNL Rec Center after work and still catch a bus home.

Star Tran is between a rock and a hard place. It is impossible to serve a community as large as Lincoln has become with the bus fleet we have. The city has declined to make the commitment of financial resources to make public transportation a priority, as have other cities that have more workable public transportation.

I could take the bus from my neighborhood to downtown - but to tell the truth, the time commitment and loss of flexibility involved is just not worth the money it would save. I choose to be environmentally conscious in other ways.
