Slow Down, You Move Too Fast

By: Mr. Wilson on August 11, 2010
Love or hate the notion of moving Lincoln's bar closing time from 1:00am to 2:00am, surely you can agree that the world isn't going to end if the City Council takes a few weeks to come to a decision. It seems obvious, doesn't it? Yet certain City Council members are in a big rush. Why? To change the time before the first Husker football game? Helping Husker fans get super-extra-mega drunk (as opposed to just super-mega drunk) doesn't strike me as a compelling reason to hurry the political process. In any event, it seems like a 2am closing time is all but assured at this point, doesn't it?

I suppose I keep waiting for the antis—if there ARE any antis—to show up with reports documenting increases in crime and hooliganism in places that have extended closing times. It just seems logical that there will be some new problems, and surely somebody somewhere has documented that. So some anti-2am person is going to show up with that data soon. Right?

I’m a fan of slow legislative processes on non-essential issues like this. But you’re right, “slow” is relative. Though I disagree, one could make the argument that the City Council has already been slow enough.

Maybe they need time to add some employees and capacity to Cornhusker Place detox. Is it a coincidence that the drunk tank shares the “Cornhusker” name with our football team? I don’t think so.

Considering that this bill was signed into law in April and that Omaha has had a 2:00 a.m. close for almost a month now, I don’t see this as rushing anything. Does anyone really think that new information is going to come to light between August 16th and August 30th?

I would agree. It’s already been slow. Change the time, or don’t change it. Just make a decision and move on already.
