Sloppy Reasoning at the LJS

By: Mr. Wilson on May 7, 2007
Today's Lincoln Journal Star editorial on LES rate hikes suffers from sloppy reasoning. The editors contention is that Lincolnites should buck up and accept LES rate hikes because we have it pretty good when it comes to the amount we pay for electricity. It may be true that we've got it good, but that is a lousy reason to sit back and watch our rates climb. We should strive for the best possible compromise between low rates and quality service that we can achieve. Comparing our rates to those paid by others is just a distraction. Note that I'm not saying that we should fight the current proposed rate hike. LES has done a pretty good job over the years managing our electric utility resources, and they have earned enough of my respect with regard to rates that I tend to trust them to do what's best for their customer-owners. If they tell me they need to raise rates 5 or 6 percent next year, well, OK. Unless, of course, somebody else can come along and explain to me why that's a horrible idea. Now, if LES really wants me to like them, they'll work toward constructing a new regional nuclear power plant within the next couple decades. Only in my dreams, I suppose.

LJS Editorial Board uses terrible logic, a Nebraska football player is arrested.  Today’s paper is just full of surprises!

Can we do a “Get to know a Lincolnite” feature where your regular readers interview each other? I’d like to interview Dave, and he can interview me if he’d like.

Sorry that was so off-topic, by the way.

Well, now that I’ve already derailed these comments, I want to add more.

My motivation is not to pick on Dave or make Dave look silly, but more along the lines of I only know Dave as that liberal-bashing moaner from his comments, and I’d imagine that there’s a human behind that grumpy facade, and I thought that might be a fun thing to add to the Lincolnite sense of “community.”

Whaddya say, Dave? Want to be the guinea pig with me?

Neal, are you finally admitting that the LJS is liberal?  I didn’t say anything about liberals, only the LJS, and you called me a liberal basher.  Is that a blatant admission or a Freudian slip? 😉

I like the idea of the interview, if only to dispel the notion of the grumpy facade.  I’m far from grumpy in any sense of the word.

Oh not at all, Dave - I was speaking in general. If I were referring to the LJS, I wouldn’t have apologized for changing the topic. 😊

Send me an e-mail at neal at cheeksofgod dot com and I’ll send you my list of questions…

I think it’s a great idea if you two are up for it. If you want to do the interview over lunch I’ll even reimburse your meals. (We’re talking the likes of Oso here, not Wilderness Ridge.)

Oh I was thinking via e-mail so that we wouldn’t have to do the awful process of transcription.

Just in time…an LJS story on Nantkes.

I don’t think electronic answers to Neal’s questions will serve the purpose both of us are hoping to achieve.  Therefore, I propose Neal sends me his questions and I’ll bring my responses to Oso, where we can discuss.  How does that sound?

However, I’m afraid that if Neal and I better understand each other then this place will be a lot less entertaining and exciting.

Well I don’t want to be Dave’s buddy or anything! I wanted to put his human side on display for all the Lincolnite visitors - not just for me. If this is turning into some kind of peace talks where we have to shake hands and smile for Mr Wilson’s camera, I’m out! 😉

(Not to mention that, by Dave’s plan, he’s the only one who gets interviewed.)

I still stand by my original proposal - Dave and I e-mail each other questions.

I also don’t like Oso.

Neal will most certainly be banned from this site for that last statement, so I think this whole exercise would be futile.

I’ve long been wondering what it would take for someone to be banned. It will be good to learn where that line in the sand is. LOL
