School’s Out

By: Mr. Wilson on March 1, 2007
Kids all across the city bounced out of bed with enthusiasm this morning as they found out that school is canceled today. I haven't been out of the house yet, but from what I can tell it was a good decision. There was a time I would have been surprised that UNL closed, but over the past couple years -- since the October 1997 snow storm, really -- it hasn't taken nearly as much to cancel classes as it used to. I can't decide if I'm surprised that state basketball is sticking to its schedule. I suppose all the teams that have to drive any great distance are probably already in town. I wonder what happens if a team isn't able to travel -- or flat out refuses to travel? [Edited to add: Now I see that most roads in and out of Lincoln have been closed. I'm really surprised the NSAA hasn't revised its position.] I'm going to be working on the computer all day today. What are you up to today?

Homework!

I left my keydrive at work yesterday. Bad, bad me. Now all my partially completed homework - not to mention all the applications I use frequently - is at work. ugh.

I just made it to work, thanks to a co-worker who lives nearby.  I didn’t put my snow tires on my car this year because I had knee surgery and went 5 weeks without driving my car (it’s a manual), so driving in the snow on bald high-performance summer tires is a death wish.  I love driving in this stuff when I have my snow tires on, so I’ve missed out on a couple good opportunities this year.

I predict a 2-3 week drama episode on the LJS Opinion page and website comments section about canceling school but continuing the state basketball tournament.  What’s the over-under on how many times people will use the athletics-over-academics mantra?

This should make the drive home interesting.

I spent half an hour digging my car out of the snowbank I ended up being parked in overnight, another half hour driving to work (normally a 7 minute trip), only to arrive and find the two office ladies saying “I thought you called Joshua.”  “No, I didn’t because I thought you called him.”  “Joshua, the club is closed today, you can go home.”  So now I’m going to spend the rest of the day being grumpy and studying.

I awoke to a gorgeous snow cover and got some needed exercise clearing off my car in the driveway. After giving my daughter instructions to knock snow off the bushes and small trees, I easily drove a couple of blocks to 48th street and then north to where I work. No problems, and I was at work early. 😊

A pleasant surprise to have the office closed today (especially after getting hit by a truck, er ... I mean the flu and being home sick for two days).

I just spent a couple hours clearing the driveway at our house and the neighbors then digging my daughter’s car out before the snow plows blocked it in.

I have some corn chowder simmering in the crock pot for supper and I’m ready to eat!
