Save the Water, Mmm-Kay?

By: Mr. Wilson on July 24, 2007
Mayor Beutler has asked (again) that Lincolnites cut back on water usage. Hopefully you are already conserving, but if you aren't, please start. Speaking of water conservation, is it just me or are more people allowing their lawns to go dormant? That seems to be the case in my neighborhood, anyway. And why not? Dormant lawns really don't look that bad, and they come with the benefit of not having to mow.

I wish more people would let the grass go dormant. It’s grass, it’s supposed to go dormant in the heat of the summer. It will green up again when the weather cools, that’s why they are called cool-season grasses.

Lincoln’s water usage keeps increasing, we need to do something to promote conservation.

I’m proud to say we let our grass grow dormant!

(That is, we’re too lazy to water/mow our lawn)

We are with Karin.

We didn’t make a concious decision to do it, but it happened. I am anti-watering for the cost and the environmental impact. We also don’t have the world’s greatest lawn, though it is decent, to begin with, so I just let nature take its course (and take a vacation from mowing).

I am sure my neighbors LOVE this attitude, but I don’t really care all that much. I am guessing they would rather their kids and grandkids have some drinking water vs. my yard remain green in 100-degree heat.

Hmmm I have a unique view on this. As I’ve said before, I live in SW Nebraska and there’s even more of a water shortage out here than there is in eastern nebraska. Yet there is no call to stop watering lawns here which surprises me. Now…it gets kinda hot here in SW Neb. for an extended period of time. Trust me, McCook’s city slogan “Nebraska’s hot spot” isn’t because there’s exciting stuff happening there. My two next door neighbors both water their lawns. And I just don’t get it.
