Round and Round

By: Mr. Wilson on March 30, 2010
Lincoln could see its first multi-lane roundabout at 14th and Superior. That, or lanes could be added in each direction (how boring!). I'm a big roundabout fan so generally speaking I'm inclined to support that plan over simple lane expansion. That isn't to say I'll end up supporting it in this case; there are plenty of variables that could cause me to change my mind in this specific scenario. I only (very!) rarely travel through that intersection, so there could be local factors that may swing my preference one way or the other. Are you in favor of trying out Lincoln's first multi-lane roundabout at 14th and Superior?

As someone that travels through that intersection everyday (sometimes several times) I’m not in favor of the idea.  I hate to pull the out-of-towner card, but with the number of people that flock to that area for reasons like Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart and all the hotels in the area, I see major confusion.

I made my first trip to DC a few months ago and I understand what they are trying to do.  There are several major intersections that have them in our nations capital.

But as often as I personally see out of town cars going the wrong direction on a one-way downtown, I don’t see the round-about going well.

Not arguing with you, just playing Devil’s advocate…

DC is one of the most out-of-towner heavy cities you’ll find. Did you find that the roundabouts there were ineffective thanks to boneheaded drivers from out of town? If roundabouts work in a city filled with non-locals, wouldn’t that suggest that your concern is misplaced?

I think the roundabouts on Sheridan Boulevard have worked pretty well. Not sure what to make of the idea of multi-lane roundabouts.

I travel through the 14th Street and Superior intersection routinely, and I am in favor of the roundabout. Lincoln has tried the roundabout and I think those experiments have been very successful. We need to try new solutions to our road congestion problems.

Even in DC where the traffic is horrible, Roundabouts allow for at least nearly constant flow of traffic. Even if it is slow, I would rather be moving than stopping and going waiting for 3-4 lights going north on 14th st.

I’m all for it.

Good points by all.  It was hard to say just in the few days I was there.  It did keep traffic moving, but at least once I was in the wrong lane at the wrong time.  There may be some satisfaction in moving, but could be the illusion as you have to repeat the process. 😊

I’m totally against the roundabout.

We used to have to drive up and down Sheridan frequently, and though for the most part, it goes smoothly, it doesn’t always, and when that happens, it creates a huge backup.  If the person isn’t aggressive enough, they idly sit there waiting…

Sheridan is a horrible example to say “Well it works here…”  I’m going to wager that the traffic on Sheridan is no where near the amount of traffic on 14th and Superior (this being backed up by the fact that it’s one lane each way verses 2 on Superior).  The issues I see with Superior street is that they have a 1 a lane going N/S despite the fact that this area of town has exploded in growth.

I remember a post on the Chefs Corner two years ago showing the added safety of roundabouts.

“There are some outstanding examples in Lincoln of engineering projects that have had a huge impact on crashes. The intersection of S. 33rd St. and Sheridan Blvd. is a case in point.
In the six years prior to the conversion, there had been 76 crashes, 20 with injuries. In the six years since the conversion, there have been 16 crashes with no injuries at all.”

That’s because everyone is taking a different route because they can’t stand the roundabout 😉
