Restaurant News

By: Mr. Wilson on September 23, 2010
It sounds like Downtowners will have a heap of new dining options in the near future. As a former Downtown worker I still follow Downtown dining news pretty closely, even though these days I probably won't get to most of these places before they close. Yeesh, saying it that way sounds pretty depressing. I'm trying to think of other restaurant news I'm aware of. Taco John's has opened in the short-lived Taco Bueno location on 84th and Leighton. I still haven't ever eaten at Taco John's. I hear I'm not missing much. There's some kind of a Japanese restaurant near Carmela's at 70th and Pioneers. Have any of you eaten there, or do you know anything about it? I've not heard any buzz despite the fact that usually Japanese food gets people talking at least a little bit. Beyond that ... well shoot, I've got nothing. I guess lately I've been more focused on the three boys in the house than on food.

a) How can you have never eaten at Taco Johns? b) How can you say you are not missing much? For fast-food tacos, they reign supreme. I’d take theirs over Amigos, Taco Bell, or Taco Inn any day of the week. And for deep-fried goodness, a Potato Ole is a thing of beauty. (realizes that none of the above fits in your healthy, vegan ways)

Healthy? Vegan? Not even close! Let me tell you about the chili cheese dog and cheese frenchee I ate last night…

I do need to try TJ’s sometime. I had Taco Bell for the first time when I was 30. Perhaps 32 is the year for Taco John’s?

A Potato Ole is probably the highest existence to which a young potato can aspire. Potato nirvana.

Taco John’s is just like Taco Bell.  It’s ok.  IMO, it beats the pants off of Taco Bueno, which was not bueno.

Kinja is the Japanese place at 70th & Pioneers.  I’ve been there twice, and enjoyed it.  There are three reviews for it on Yelp, including mine.

Are you guys out of your minds? A potato ole is just an average deep fried potato round.

The Apple Grande was always my fave dessert. They used to put red-hots on it. Don’t know if they still do. I’m dieting.  😛

Been to Kinja once. Thought the Sex and the City was wonderful. Very generous servings. The sashimi was well done and absolutely delicious. My son is my sushi bud, and he’s out of town now - but when he gets back, that’s the first place we are going!
