Parking is a Bear at State Fair Park

Robbie and I went with my parents to Friday night’s Husker volleyball match at the Devaney Center. The match was great—even if we were sitting in the rafters—but the post-match exodus was a pain. Not that we were surprised, what with all the Antelope Valley Project-related road construction going on.

As we sat, unmoving, in the parking lot, I began to wonder if our parking spot just east of the Grandstand hadn’t left us destined to wait longer than most. That leads me to ask you folks: Where are the best places to park when attending events at Devaney? Which are the spots to avoid?

I am a season ticket holder for men’s basketball, and ran into that same problem all of last season. I found something that seems to work out well is to get there about 45-60 minutes before game time, park in a place where you can easily pull out and go west towards the 14th street exit. I usually parked next to the Ag Hall. And when exiting, head west, drive down the hill past the open air auditorium, and head out towards 14th street. I never had problems getting out that way at all. Traffic seemed to move easily. Going out on 27th street was a complete nightmare.

We were there too.  When we go to events, we typically park clear to the northeast (east of the horse track.) We don’t mind walking, though, and we typically rush to our car afterwords, beating all the old people, and can zip out to 27th.

I had the same experience Friday.  Traffic heading towards 27th wasn’t moving slowly.  It wasn’t moving at all.  15 minutes we sat, then were able to turn around and eventually went west to exit.

Next time, I’ll park on campus and walk.

Getting into the Devaney was the worst part for us.  The weather certainly didn’t help.  We parked way in the northeast section of the grounds, over by where the building is that had the Cabela’s display in at the State Fair.

After the game we stood around and let the crowd clear, by the time we hiked to our car, it was fairly easy getting out to 27th Street.
