One Year Before the Big Farewell

By: Mr. Wilson on August 26, 2008
The State Fair had a big weekend. I'm not surprised. Combine great weather with the impending move and you've got yourself a recipe for some healthy attendance numbers. Did you go? Are you planning to go? As an aside, have any of you noticed that a good proportion of people seem to think this is the State Fair's last year in Lincoln?

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.

No, I didn’t go, and no I don’t plan to go.

We went last night to the Boyz II Men Free concert.  We walked around a little bit before they took the stage.  It was nice but you can see that it needs some new surroundings to make it a little less old looking.  I hadn’t been there in a few years and I could still find everything I wanted to see with ease because it was in the same place, I don’t know if that is good or bad.  The concert was great thought.  Boyz II Men put on a great show and the amphitheaters and every where around it was packed.  Good pick State Fair Guys.  😊

I went Sunday, because I was volunteering at a booth, and then took some time to walk around. I plan to go back with my daughter later this week.

Browsed some exhibits, listened to Kusi Taki (always enjoyable), ate a corn dog (the prices were lower and the food was great at a little booth on the eastern edge, near the equipment displays and parking), and played a couple Bingo games. They changed the bingo - paper cards (not a green approach and it leads to trash), fewer prizes, and the quality of prize depended on how many people were playing the game. Most of the time you had to choose from Table 1 & 2 - full of useless plastic stuff. I couldn’t find the Made in Nebraska display - the usual building had an external announcement about taking a fair survey, so I didn’t go in. Does anyone know where the Made in NE food went this year?

It’s sad how the buildings have deteriorated, including the holes in the roof. But that process started years ago - an evil plan…“see how much the buildings have fallen apart? we should just tear them down and move the Fair….”

Lincoln won’t appreciate what it lost until it’s gone.

I can’t possibly go. I must stay close to all media outlets as I await the announcement of Plan B from Roger Yant and Fair Vote Nebraska.

The Derailers Sunday are gonna get us to go.

I have never really cared for the fair, but end up going every other year to see a band.  REO was not as good as I thought they would be :(

I’m going to go on Sunday too, because I’ve never been to a state fair ever.  Looks like some good photo ops.

Roger is so dreamy 😉
His letters to the editor fill my heart with joy.

I love how he has that magazine he puts out to get free services from folks, but does not have a website for it.  That is so 1997.

It’s in the Lancaster Building. The logic of that particular move is beyond me.

I like how he has 2 magazines in one, that you can read one half, flip it over, and read the other.

Roger should take some of his hard-earned money and hire someone to actually proof read the stuff he writes in there. Bonus points for actually using correct grammar and punctuation. As is, it’s almost worth penny (free).

We’re going tonight, and NOTHING’S GONNA STOP US NOW.

Like Diane, I was out at the fair to work a booth.  It seemed to be a very healthy turnout while I was there.

I didn’t eat anything there…yet.  I’ll be back Thursday to stuff my face with fried delicacies.

Hubby and I went on Sunday afternoon.  We walked around, looked at displays, had some GREAT honey ice cream and went home.
It is a shame that the fair is moving, but Hall County has always done a GREAT job with their county fair so I expect the same for the State Fair.  I must say that in the past they’ve done a better job of judging needlework.  Each year I continue to see ribbons going to absolutely horrible projects and nothing going to many good projects.  Maybe the judges in GI will do a better job.

My lovely wife and I were discussing this last night.  She is a Nebraska Native and has never attended the state fair.  So, we will be going this weekend for that reason.  Just to say she attended the fair once before it moved.

I have been to the fair here several times and really have no desire to go back.  When I moved here I was shocked by how small and dismal the Nebraska state fair is.  The move to Grand Island may turn this into a real State Fair.

Thanks Swid. I’ll find them during my next visit.

I didn’t even realize the fair was going on until Sunday night. I thought it started next weekend. I’ll go once or twice since I’m unlikely to go to G.I. once they move the fair there.

I didn’t realize it until I saw this post, mainly. Whoops.
