No Peeking!

Deena Winter sounds a little annoyed by the City in her most recent column as she walks us through her efforts to get the City to release information about the Haymarket arena proposals. The Journal Star went all the way to the Attorney General, but they came away (mostly) empty handed. City officials are keeping the proposals locked up tight. One of the developers no longer in the running for the job has said he's surprised by the City's stubbornness; most cities, according to Greg Garfield, open up records to public inspection, or at least limit less of the materials. Ms. Winter also notes that Dr. Tom and the City are "very, very close" to reaching an agreement that would place the Huskers in the new arena. That's consistent with what a little bird is telling me. In fact, it sounds like the Huskers are much more likely to be tenants than not. That is huge, huge, HUGE news for the arena. A whole host of fence-sitting voters would be much more likely to vote to fund the arena if the Huskers will play there.

All the money spent on Memorial Stadium, and the idea of it. There is some name recognition there, and some tradition. Is he talking about the other Husker sports that aren’t football?

I always guessed that if Lincoln was going to build an arena that it would have had to have Nebraska basketball in it.  My thoughts were if there was going to be an arena that Nebraska basketball would be involved and if they weren’t involved then there wouldn’t be an arena.  IMO, it would be stupid for Lincoln to put up an arena w/o Nebraska Basketball.  Unless they were intent on finding another major tenant.  Honestly, who could they find to put in there?

Are there any up-and-coming basketball leagues these days? That’s always been another possibility, albeit a risky one.

The NBDL (National Basketball Devlopmental League) is the only one that I can think of.  That’s minor league NBA basketball basically.

14 teams right now and 3 more coming in the next 2 years.  Only 3 teams have gone belly up so far since the league started in 01.

There are some teams around this area (Sioux Falls, SD, Des Moines, IA,    Bismarck, ND) so I guess that wouldn’t be out of the question.
