Nebraska’s Plates to Go Bugly
We Nebraskans take our license plates too seriously sometimes. Remember how much vitriol there was when we dropped county numbers for a few counties? So keeping in mind that none of this really matters in the big scheme of things, check out our options for our next license plate:
I count one legitimate option, one clipart option that’s so boring it will induce an epidemic of drivers falling asleep at the wheel, and two brain-bendingly bad options that look like they were pulled directly from default templates from a 1995 version of MS Paint. Come on, DMV, this is the best you could come up with? I strongly—strongly—doubt that.
Vote carefully, Lincolnites. And by that I mean: For the love of God, please vote for the bird because it’s the only reasonably respectable option. Remember, we’re stuck with these things until December 31, 2017.

If anyone remembers the last time we had a plate design vote, one of the finalists was a meadowlark/goldenrod design that was very similar to this one. (Sadly, this is as close as I can get finding it on the Internet.) Personally, I thought the bird design was the best-looking choice the last time, but I (and the DMV) underestimated Nebraskans’ desire to have some combination of state outlines, covered wagons, sunrises, windmills and Chimney Rock slapped on their cars.
Given that 3 of the 4 options in this vote are best described as EPIC FAIL, I’d guess the DMV really wants a bird design this time around.

Yeah, the last 3 are so bad its almost negligent. Its like someone decided to make an anti-appealing license plate. I voted for the bird one.

I don’t like the bird at all. I go for the outline with the p*nis of the plains on it.
In all seriousness, if you agree that license plates are a little chance to have a piece of marketing and advertising as you roam about the nation, I still think it’s a crime that they ever, ever removed “The Good Life” from the plates.
That said, the 4th plate is worthless. The second is an abysmal attempt. Why are we paying these people? They could run a statewide contest for 1st graders and come up with better designs.
As much as I think we should include “The Good Life”, I equally think it’s pointless to put the .GOV so prominently.

Maybe over the embarassment of those bicentennial (or was it Nebraska Centennial) plates that we used forever.
Thank God those yellow and orange monstrosities didn’t last more than 3 years. They clashed with every car on the road.
It is a fair question - Colorado has basically maintained one plate style forever.

The worst part about this is when the voting is done and the plates are selected, the DMV will say ‘the citizens of Nebraska chose this plate’. It makes us look so bad.

I heard on the news that these were the rejects from the last time we picked a license plate. Colorado has had, essentially, the same style of plate since I was a kid (30+ years). I wish we would do the same, and then create specialized ones so that if folks are bored or hate the “generic” one they can purchase that and be done with it. How much is it going to cost to mass produce that many new license plates?

This is what California does- they have a LOT of options for plate customization, which gets more revenue for the DMV. I was shocked when I moved here and had to get new plates every three years. Seems like a colossal waste of resources and my time.

I might license my car out of state next time. It’ll have nothing to do with taxes, as if that would not be reason enough. It will be because every single plate listed here is gag inducing.
With no sarcasm I can say that high school students in Nebraska regularly create digital products that exceed the quality of any one of the offering here.
This is embarrassing.

I would like to have the plates from the mid-90’s back. The ones with the red orange black sunset strip across the top.
