Money Well Spent?

State Auditor Mike Foley has turned into a bit of a folk hero of late. Now there's talk he may get involved in Lincoln's Antelope Valley Project, either by invitation or on his own volition. I can't help but think his input would be welcomed by a substantial number of Lincolnites. If he were to conduct an audit, and if he were to issue a mostly positive report, it might give the City a small boost going into next year's arena vote. But if he were to issue a negative report ... Well, I suspect we'd hear a few discouraging words from a whole host of folks.

I have to say, something seems “off” to me about all this latest coverage (not on Lincolnite, but in general) of the Antelope Valley Project. We didn’t get to vote, we just opened our checkbook and started digging.

It’s not like we can stop now. I would love to see a true audit, and I’m not happy to pay someone $280 an hour to offer tours. But at some level, it now needs to be completed. I’m for doing it right, and doing it in the most cost-effective way possible (as all city projects should be). It just seems the LJS has suddenly gotten a case of faux outrage.

This would be like starting the arena, then realizing when it’s partially done that, wow, it’s a big expensive project and we miscalculated costs. It still needs to be finished, once it is started.

If there have been legitimate shenanigans, I’m the first to say heads should roll. I invite all the scrutiny in the world on both of these important and very expensive projects. But the AVP has to be seen through, now that we’ve come this far.

Foley’s right in that the money they have set aside for audits wouldn’t give them the kind of audit his team might perform. He has a good group of people that can devote the time necessary to answer the questions Lincolnites might have.
