Money Runs Short at 48th and O

By: Mr. Wilson on September 15, 2005
Expected federal funding for the 48th & 'O' redevelopment didn't pan out. 48th & 'O' is incredibly valuable property (blighted designation aside). Why are tax dollars needed to support the project anyway?

Half of the property is a pain in the ass to get to.  If you’re going south on 48th and want to get to the NE corner where that gas station sits, it takes quite a bit of maneuvering.  Ditto for heading east or west on O and trying to get to the SE or NE sides respectively.  Developers thinking about those spots need to make sure they have destination-type businesses there; something you can’t get anywhere else in town.  A Walgreens, Burger King and another bank branch won’t cut it.
