Mmmm, Fried Dough

It may not be Chik-fil-a, but for many Lincolnites it's surely a close second place. That's right, Dunkin' Donuts is coming to Lincoln. I'm told Dunkin' Donuts is incredible. My experience, extremely limited though it may be, is that it's just another donut shop. I have no doubt that the lines out the door when the first store opens will prove me wrong. (Fun fact: the last time I ate at a DD was in some town outside of Boston when we were in the area to pick up Robbie.) I'm trying to think where I would locate a DD if I were involved in such a decision. There will be 9 stores divided between Lincoln and Omaha, so there's a good chance we're eventually looking at at least three locations here in town. I have to think that Downtown on P Street offers some pretty compelling advantages. I could also see 84th Street being a strong possibility, perhaps somewhere around Adams. Are you looking forward to Dunkin' Donuts's (Donuts'?) arrival? Where would you locate the stores?

I couldn’t agree more. I love to eat donuts but DD is no big deal relative to other chains/brands in my opinion.

Its very hard for me to tell the difference in a blind taste test between DD and say, Mister Donut or any of the other mass produced brands. There are qualitative differences between the chain donut brands, but they are not nearly as noticeable as say, the differences between burgers at various chain restaurants.

Personally, I like the donuts they have at Russ’s. But yes, the new DDs will be packed on opening day. I’ll probably go to one sometime after they open, but don’t expect to see me lined up waiting outside on day 1.

I don’t see it as much of a game changer. DD is much more sought after for its coffee and that will be a bigger draw than donuts for most people. It’s been a hot commodity in the franchise world on the East Coast for a long time. I love donuts, but have to keep them at bay as much as possible. I’m always happy to have one even from HyVee or Super Saver, and LaMer’s is like a treat. I’d visit a DD once in a blue moon, but it won’t change my world. I’m guessing that you won’t see all 9 come to be in the time frame that has been given. That’s just how the franchise agreements are splashed. Our Famous Dave’s is one of 5 or more that should have seen the light of day by now. Taco Beuno came to Lincoln to set the world on fire. Raising Cane’s and Fazoli’s were each done with multiple-unit agreements, and it took more than a decade (and the demise of said Tace Beuno) for a second Lincoln location.

They do have good selection for a chain place, and good coffee too. I would drive well out of the way to get to Conroy’s over DD though.

I think they would do well anywhere between Westroads and 48th & O.

DD is so overrated, eaten there on more than one occasion and have never been impressed.

Hmm, yes. O Street would be excellent. I can think of a development around the 5900 block of O Street that will house oodles of caffeine-addicted folks…
